Porsche turbo for S55
I posted the same question on 6speedonline but I am also posting here to get the perspective of S55 owners.
I realize it's like comparing apples to oranges.
My wife's E-420 was rammed by someone running through a stop sign. Anyway, we were shopping for a replacement and came across a brand new 04 S55, Pewter metallic/ Charcoal, loaded with Distronic, Parktronic, Keyless Go, Hands free comm w/ VCS, electric trunk closer, sunshade, etc. for MSRP of just under $120K. I have an 03 Porsche turbo w/ factory perfomance upgrade to 450HP with 6700 miles. They offered $110K for my car (I paid $126K) I would like to keep the turbo but my wife thinks I am spending way too much cash on cars.
They were asking $20K over sticker but "came down" to MSRP.
Is this a fair deal for a S55 ? Can I find one below MSRP?
Other option is to keep the turbo and buy the next generation S class in a year or so but it probably won't be an AMG version.
Link to pics of the E class. Both my wife and son walked away.
Thank god for well built cars.

whoa, its good to hear that you and your family walked away from that one...
personally, I'd go for the s55 (I don't know weather that is a good price or not) only because I prefer confort over all out performance, but you won't be doing so bad speed-wise in an s55 thats for damn sure good luck with your decision.

their trade in price on the 996TT is in-line with reality, imo. i took quite a haircut on my '01.
you can negotiate S55 prices down. i paid under MSRP for my '03, though it was in october '03 after the '04s were arriving.
doody.

NOOOOO... DONT SELL THE TURBO.. Once you've driven the 911 turbo, how can you sell it? The S55 wont be anything near the Porsche. Sure the S55 can accelerate like a bat out of hell, but it wont give you the raw driving experience like the Porsche. I would keep the Turbo forever, or trade in it when the new Turbo comes out. Good thing your wife and son are ok.

The MB dealer called me back 2 days later to say that they sold the S55 for $10K OVER MSRP and offered to find me another one. Subsequently, we looked at BMW 745Li and Audi A8L but decided to wait for the next generation S class.
This forces me to drive my turbo as a daily car instead of occasional weekend use. I am sure added mileage will affect resale value when the time comes but I am enjoying it too much to care. Afterall, why have it if I am going to just park it in the garage ? It's a car and meant to be driven. I have a 7yr, 100K mile warranty on the car and will probably keep it for a while.
it's just that I was very excited about the S55 on that visit to the dealer show room and the whole accident got me thinking about a larger car. I made the above post to get a feel for the S55 market because I was intending to go back and make the deal. After having some time to reflect on the whole situation, I am glad that I kept the turbo.

Don't pay over list for the S55. Its not rare by any means. My dealer has a Blue and Black in stock right now, they haven't moved it in at least 2 months.
I'd seriously think about keeping the TT and getting the E55 instead. Your wife won't miss the S since she's coming from an E anyways.

golfnut-
Glad to hear you and your family walked away from the accident.
Just wondering does your son have a 2001 996tt and a M5? I think I saw the same car over on the M5 board in a post by Greg.

$20K over for the S55?
I think your dealer was trying to rip you off. The S55 is not rare at all. I see quite a few of them in So Cal.
But please keep the porsche! The Turbo is awesome! How can you consider selling it?
I, personally, don't like Mercedes or BMW that much. I prefer Porsche, Lexus, Audi, and Cadillac. I notice you have an LX470, did you try the new LS? It's not that expensive and is pretty good deal for the $$$! BTW, my dad took delivery of his new LX470 about a month ago and he loves it!

Keeping the turbo
Thanks for all your reply. I am glad that I kept the turbo. I am using it as my daily car and loving every minute of driving it.
I am planning on picking up the next generation S class which is about 12 months away from what I've heard.
If I happen to come across a great deal on the current body style S55 in the meantime, I might get tempted. I am staying away from the dealer showrooms for now.
Bauer, no my son does not have a M5. I am curious to see how my car ended up on M5 board. Do you have a link ?

I wouldent consider trading the Porsche Turbo ever even though the S55 can poisslby accelerate even or close to the turbo it will never come close as a sports car. Keep the turbo and get a used 2k3 E55.

Golfnut,
You might regret getting rid of your TT even though the S55 is an amazing machine. Glad to hear your wife and yourself got away from the wreck.
By the way is yours slate or seal grey? Gorgeous pics!

my dad just signed for a 04 s55. it is fully fully loaded. it had 1500 miles in it and used for less then 4 months. the guy that traded it in to the dealer bought some hot $10,000 rims when he got the car. the total cost was $101,000. a new fully loaded is $124,000 plus $10,000 for the rims. so i think its a good deal.
