2005 S55 - Weistec Secondary HE Fitment

Having some issues fitting a Weistec secondary Heat Exchanger. Before I bought it, I confirmed with them that it would fit. Mounting it is no problem from what we can tell, we can re-mount the hydraulic ABC line. The issue is that the bends go right into the Primary HE... What am I missing? I did talk to Weistec but haven't revived any replies.. They don't offer phone support, only email.

P.S. I talked to some other manufacturers that make HEs, but they all said they wouldnt fit the w220 m113k. Weistec is the only one that said it would fit.

Weistec was zero help. The list the S55 on their site as compatible, but there's no way.. I went through several options in my head: heating the pipe and bending it, cutting off the OEM spout from the stock HE and welding it on, cutting the bend off and re-welding. Decided to go with the latter. Took the HE to a very reputable welder in my area, and explained the situation. The results speak for themselves; im happy with it.. Seems like Weistec should have made it this way to begin with? Will follow up with some install pictures.

Here is the response from Weistec:
"Unfortunately Mercedes always has a lot of variation when it comes to heat exchangers and other auxiliary coolers. That is why this heat exchanger is sold as just that, a heat exchanger, not an all inclusive kit for any specific chassis. Most typically people are installing these parts in the SL and E class cars which generally has less "stuff" in the bumper."

good work, just crazy that it didn't direct fit
aluminum welding is difficult but once you know how you can build anything
good luck

Great! Keep us in the loop with the rest of the install. Does the auxlliary low temp cooler have to be moved slight back and if the front bumper cover has enough clearance.

Are you tracking this car? I mean, the extra “stuff” in the SClass bumper is for cooling, generally, and once you upgrade the pump, I don’t know of any SClass owner who’s actually NEEDED more cooling. I personally have never seen my car run hotter than 110*C, and I tend to drive it like I stole it on occasion, just because I can and why the hell not? Like, why else maintain it to spec if you can’t drive it to spec?

Unless you’re running the hottest plugs, tune, and supercharger pulley, I’m wondering what this project is about (as much as I’m happy to eat popcorn and watch the show).

From what my guy told me, nothing has to be moved. The HE will mount directly to the bumper support and fit in the same spot as the oem HE. He mocked it up, and said there is plenty of room. The main issue was the bends hitting the primary HE.

Yes I have been tracking the car, and plan on continuing to do so. Along with this HE, we are going to be splitting the cooling circuits too. Right now the car has an ECU tune from RaceIQ (460whp/492wtq on the dyno), Johnson CM30, and removed rear cats/resonators w/ xpipe; nothing too crazy. Next up will be headers, possibly a trunk tank, bigger IC pump, then some suspension stuff so i can run a little camber. I tracked the car at Mid Ohio on 6/1 with ambient temps about 70F. Here are the results from the TorquePro app. We had 7 total 20 minute sessions, and this was the 7th session. The other 6 sessions the car did not get above 212F coolant temp, so it never dropped any timing. Only on the 7th run did the car start to pull timing due to coolant temp over 212. Going back to Mid Ohio on the 11th and temps are slated to be in the 90s.

What size pulley are you running for those numbers? Race IQ here too, did you get your TCU tuned by Tony as well.

Got it all back together. The main issue was the ABC hydraulic lines which had to be moved in order to mount the HE to the bumper beam. This wasn't hard, just moving some brackets and hoses. While Weistec says this will fit the S55, it most certainly will not, without modification of the HE, and the car.

Kudos on the visual and thanks for sharing the knowledge with the install. What did you end up doing with the auxiliary temp cooler? Just completely removed it or is incorporated behind the Weistec HE I've been looking to do this modification for sometime now with my fixed pulley and the So Cal summer heat, it makes practical sense to do so. I've been reluctant to pull the trigger due to the lack of information to what's a doable option (other than the Eurocharged unit), however with your install and another member's (Budget Audio) custom HE....it sheds light with new options available. Keep us inform with what IAT improvements you see.

We did not have to move any other coolers, just a few lines/brackets for the lines. When we removed the OEM secondary HE, we took out all the mounting brackets & such that were with it. What was left is what you see in the picture with the car on the lift without the OEM HE installed, so it was plenty of room to mount the Weistec HE. Will wait to post anything about IATs until after I upgrade the pump. Going with a Pierburg CWA100-3 wired for ignition-on. I thought my Johnson CM30 would be enough, but there was no change in IATs.

Update on this. It is going very well. Decided to upgrade the pump from a CM30 to a Pierburg CWA100 wired for ignition, and split the cooling. Temps actually increased once I split the cooling because I feel the pump was lacking. Temps were dangerously high on the track after multiple 20 minute sessions. Once we upgraded the pump, temps improved quite a bit.

Hi. Could you please expand on your install of the Pierburg CWA100? What modifications were required? Any tips/tricks for install? Last, where did you source the Pierburg? Thank you.

We just wired to a fused 12v line to the fuse box in the engine bay. Then find a grounding point. Nothing special. Id send you a picture, but we covered everything up real well, so it is not accessible. The Pierburg CWA100-3 was purchased from VRP; they brand it as "superflow pump". It is the same thing.
