W221 s65 buyer guide or recommendations

Hello everyone, my name is Alex and me and my dad have been bitten by the w221 bug. We have been lookin for the perfect car here in Dominican Republic and we’ve looked at a lot of s550s and s350s, but they weren’t quite what we were looking for. The other day we came across this 2008 s65 amg and instantly fell in love. We went to look at it but it looked good, even tho we ain’t no mb technician. We were thinking on going to the local mb dealer but we wanted to know if there was any major flaw or issues to look for. The car has 48.700 miles and is listed on 25,900 dollars.

It’s been upgraded to the facelifted body kit

Pretty car Alex.... My S-65 is same year and colors but with the horrible chrome wheels. Trade for my wheels? (rolls eyes) I love my S-65.... Keep in mind that I'm a damned good mechanic who has been it 35 years.

Alex if you and Dad are not mechanically and electronically inclined this may not be the car for you once something happens.... Unless you have access to a mechanic who is well and truly able to handle it. Brakes and suspension parts (suspension arms, tie rods, bushings ect) are straightforward enough but more expensive then say.... the Toyota. Systems in the car such as ABC, Climate control, any of the myriad electronic safety systems, COMMAND, et al can be challenging for those unfamiliar when it happens.

Before purchasing it you MUST have a REAL inspection done by a mechanic who will know what to look for. Clearly implied is a Mercedes mechanic who has experience and training with the 221 car and the bent-12.

Many to most D-I-Y projects are easy enough. Search here to learn about it.

alright, so me and my dad took the car to a Mercedes Benz technician to get a ppi, the results were shocking. The car had a coolant leak and all the tie rods and bushings were shot. We came into the conclusion that the car had been hardly abused even tho the car only has 47k miles, so we decided not to buy it. We didn’t needed the car at the time so it’s ok to wait a little bit. We are now going to look for a newer s class probably an s550 or an s63 amg. Thank you so much for your help.

As you can see, totally shot

There you can see the coolant dripping out

Those seem to be minor issues. You can use those issues to negotiate. If you have budget of $15k on top of the purchase price then you should take a look at it. For $40k, you're getting something that's better than 99.9% of anything out there.

Tie rods and suspension bushings are normal consumable items on a 5000lb+ car.

Number of years implies she is due for cooling system fun. Don't be too surprised to find a cracked radiator for that one.

47,000 miles says she is due for front suspension arms (all of them in front). Tie rods happen. Also due is brake pads and rotors on both ends of the car.

Be sure there are no misfire codes hidden away in ECU memory.

I did mention they need some love....

$40k is too much to pay for a sorted 2008,at least here in the USA. Book value is probably around $25-$30k. I would pay a little more than that for convenience and the right car at the right time, but not that much more.

This is what I was thinking on $40k budget: $28k for a sorted car, $2k for shipping, $2k for sale tax, $2k for fluids and $2k for tires. That's $36k with $4k reserved for unexpected problems.
Anyway, the guy before me bought a 07 S65 from MB dealer for $26k. He spent $2k on new set of tires. He spent another $2k on transmission fluid service and passenger seat SRS error so he's out $32k with sale tax.
After 2months of ownership, he put it up for sale and he asked for $25k, $23k then $20k. I bought it unseen for $19.5k with one set of key so now I have >$15k budget on unexpected problems...

It had been 3months and 3000miles since purchase. So far no issues. It's a joy to own this MB flagship for $20k.
