W220 2006 S65 -- Whining / Whirring / Buzzing Sound in Engine Bay (Driver's Side)

2006 S65; 2005 S600
W220 2006 S65 -- Whining / Whirring / Buzzing Sound in Engine Bay (Driver's Side)

The car, a W220 2006 S65, has 51k miles and is healthy and well maintained. After a spirited drive where the car was pushed to its limits, it developed a whining sound in the engine bay that changes tone with the RPMs. It almost sounds like a supercharger whine. A few videos:

Searching this forum, it sounds like the issue may be an ABC accumulator, but these posts are specific to the S55:

222 S-65
Pulse dampener for ABC comes to mind.

Every time I have had one fail the reservoir is covered with ABC oil that has just been pushed out by the nitrogen bomb having a failure of its bladder.

Judging by the sound produced by your video, the whining sound is coming from the combo ABC/Power steering pump. Did you check the fluid levels in their respective reservoirs?
Use an automotive stethoscope or long screwdriver touched to the body of the pump and connect it to your ear(s) and have rev the car and see if you can pick up the location of the sound.

Tandem pump sounds near dry. Also, what are the conditions of your engine and transmission mounts. Sounds like they're resting on the chassis somewhere. I can't imagine that's not vibrating. If vibrations as well, check mounts. If no vibrations, then isolated to tandem pump.

What did you see when you checked the ABC fluid level?

Thank you all for your suggestions. The tandem pump did have enough oil in it, so that wasn't the cause of the noise.

I had the sound diagnosed as coming from the ABC pump, but no specifics beyond that. The pump seems to be working fine, no leaks, no error codes, and the suspension raises and lowers with the button. My gut feeling is that the pump is okay and the sound may be coming from the Pulsation Damper.

The mechanic is not as experienced with ABC suspensions as I had hoped (even though is this is a highly respected Euro shop) so I will be taking it elsewhere for another opinion. If anyone knows a good Benz mechanic in the DFW area, please let me know.

Call Roger Tyson; at 928Rus.com He is in the Dallas area he has 3 (V12's) and should be able to tell you were to go. I have rebuild V12 for him in the past

This problem cost me close to $6K to fix back when I had my S600, but this was almost 15 years ago. Nobody knew how to figure out what the heck was wrong with it; it was the pulsation damper. Actually not that difficult to fix, harder to find someone comfortable with it.

Yes, and I got a great deal on my car back then because everyone was afraid of them. By 10 years ago everyone knew it was a simple matter of fluid, filters and accumulators. I have to say, all of this got a lot simpler for me when I (1) learned here what to do, then simply (2) paid my dealer to do it. I had no incentive to trust anyone else with the ABC system. The rest of the car, sure, but not that. As people have learned over the years, I now have an Indy or 2 I can take the car to for ABC service.
