Finally did it
There is no MY17 order guide yet but he was not aware of any significant changes, other than of course the availability of the cabriolet. I'll have the opportunity to change options but this is what I've selected for now:

I was planning on the Burmester high-end audio system but that was the one thing he tried to talk me out of, saying the standard audio was superb and the high-end really only mattered for surround sound programs. It is an expensive option but I'm an audiophile so still may opt for it; I definitely would if it had the awesome pop out rotating tweeters of the sedan model!
Total MSRP as configured, including the delivery charge, was $197,035, and target is to get about ~ 7% off that.
I don't anticipate wanting or needing much aftermarket stuff, other than maybe an ECU tune depending on results of a dyno test. It seems like a lot of the M157 biturbos measure significantly beyond spec, in which case the risk/benefit ratio of an ECU tune favors leaving things alone.

I can only assume that neither the 9sp MCT nor the DCT can reliably handle the torque of the M157 biturbo. Seems like going forward, AMG is migrating at least their lighter V8 vehicles (C63 and E63, presumably the next CLS63 whenever that comes) to the M178 which mates well with the DCT.
On the other hand, I think the MY17 S550 Coupe and Cabriolet will come with the 9sp MCT.
The 7sp MCT is a weak spot in these cars, but guess one has to accept it for what it is or opt for something with much lower torque. I think the AMG S class at nearly 2.5 tons needs the torque, too.

I personally the think outside of the DCT- the ZF8 tranny would have been the best tq converting option out there. (I know the MCT doesn't have that converter)

DME (aka ecu) tuning of the control unit to adjust mapping for more power-- The M157 has readily available tunes to bump up the hp and tq levels (My SL63 was the same hp/tq rating as the S63 Coupe). But most, if not all tuners, also remap the throttle response and can even optimize the shifting on the MCT. My tuner was OE Tuning (sponsor here)... he tuned all my MCT's (E63 n/a, C63 BS, CLS63TT, E63 Wagon TT, SL63TT). The "sluggishness" or mush pedal was removed and the car just felt more like it should and of course the gains in hp and tq in the sweet spot rpm's was intense.

Just don't drive the AMG GTS - that transmission will spoil you vs the MCT. I took an S63 Coupe out for a spin on Friday and boy its a different world when I hit the gas (in regards to transmission response/feel/speed of shifts).
I actually was thinking about the S63C but I might circle back towards a BMW Gran Coupe M6. Maybe.
I do wonder how much headroom there is for enhacing the M178 before it will cause premature failure of the transmission ? I know the 7sp MCT can handle ~ 1000NM torque.

I'm still waiting for a MY17 build slot to open, hopefully not too much longer.
It will be really disappointing if M-B doesn't upgrade the MY17 S class models to newer COMAND software and improved 1920x720 dash displays coming with the new E class, not to mention all the other new tech. Alas it probably won't arrive until MY18 for sedans and possibly MY19 for the coupes/cabriolets. Prelim info on the cabriolet is that it adds nothing to the existing model except the drop top and its associated new features. But the MY17 cab and coupe still could arrive with some unexpected changes. As soon as I find out any more info about the MY17 models, I will update.
Since there are no substantive changes to the S63 for MY17 (other than a new porcelain and deep sea blue interior combo, airscarf with warmth & comfort package which I wasn't getting, and exterior night styling package) I'm watching the pre-owned markets for MY15/16 S63 and S65 coupes. I've seen S63 as low as $130k and S65 as low as $170k.
During this wait, I am starting to get more interested in a Tesla Model S; it's the only other vehicle I'm actually considering, pondered a C63S for a day before deciding against it. The MS exterior is not nearly attractive as the C217 but it is one of the better looking four door sedans out there. I don't care for the interior at all but the P90DL is just unbelievablely fast - gave me big time tunnel vision. And between the $7500 tax credit, nearly free registration here in AZ (S63 will be nearly $10k over three years) and 1.49% financing they are offering, it is tempting. Particularly when I look at the awful MBF lease deals and financing. There is currently an $8k cash back incentive with MBF finance, but it's really just a partial refund of excessive interest as their rate is 3.99%; Chase will finance at 2.2%. Based on my use as a daily driver and my driving habits, about 8k miles per year with rare long trips covered by supercharger stations (mainly to Southern California and Las Vegas) , it would be ideal. If I could just get over that bare interior with giant iPad always in your face...
