S63 Wheels

Just bought a S63 Coupe. Took Euro delivery. Great experience. Toured assembly plant and AMG plant. Found out you cannot visit AMG unless you own one. They as for VIN to set up tour. Question for the forum is wheels. I have stock 20's on the 5 spoke. They don't "pop". If I go with some summer tires and aftermarket rims, will 21's be to rough of a ride? Another concern is I am in mid west and pot holes and roads are not like west coast or south. What wheel company do you guys recommend? What size for sport and ride characteristics ? No way I want to go larger than 21's

Just a few thoughts. 21" wheels and pot holes do not get along in NY state. I have 20" wheels and two have cracked on my BMW. Problem with some after market wheels is if they go down you have to wait many days even weeks for replacement...ask installer how quickly a replacement can be gotten if needed (and hold him to it if you have a problem). On my wife's M-B I went with best looking optional wheels M-B has to offer and took out their wheel/tire insurance. Though insurance not cheap it saved me big bucks having experienced one cracked wheel and two tire gashes caused by pot holes. In each instance M-B insurance paid for towing and had her back on the road in one day at no charge. Just saying...

HRE and ADV are my favorite aftermarket wheels but they are costly.

If you opt for 21" ride quality will suffer a bit and the chance of getting a bent wheel will increase, but there is still a decent amount of sidewall and a strong forged wheels should hold up okay if you keep the tires well inflated and avoid the largest potholes. Handling will improve a bit with the lower profile tires too. Tire choices are more limited in 21" but I think Michelin PSS are available and they are the ones you'd want anyway.

Aftermarket wheels also can be purchased wider than OEM so accomodate fatter tires.

All that said, the 10-spoke forged 20" wheels are nice and might save you headaches and will be cheaper. I'm planning on getting the black ones for mine and not replacing them.

Please tell me more about the Euro Delivery - been strongly considering it.

In response to your concerns about 21's, yes a 21" wheel will yield a slightly stiffer ride than the 20's due to the lower profile tires but the differences would be minuscule. if you don't want to compromise ride comfort at all then we can still set you up with 20" wheels that will more than pop - they'll completely transform the look of your car. HRE & Adv.1 will be the top options hands down

European delivery starts with one night hotel paid by Mercedes. Next day, go Sindelfingen for plant tour. Make sure you reserve "center of excellence" delivery instead of standard. VIP treatment. very cool. They provide a nice lunch after tour and then unveil the car. Guy explains car to you for about 45 minutes. Then, you are off driving the car. They make it clear not to red line the car or rev it over 4500 RPM or drive it over 85 MPH for 1,500 miles. After 300 miles, I did get it up to 140 MPH on autobahn for a brief period but it wasn't even sweating. Thing runs like a locomotive at high speed. Make reservation for AMG engine plant. Personalized tour. Very cool but you have to buy an AMG car. My wife and I had a blast, she want one now too.

I went with 20s but wider than stock. I'm happy with how it sits.
