Yes, the pins go through the bumper. The two circular clips on the back have teeth that grab onto the pins. If you pry it up from the front, it's likely that the pins will break instead of the clips working free. Regardless, if you install the new emblem, you'll have to install pins on the back, so you'll have to figure out how to undo some part of the bumper to get access to the back anyway. My recommendation is to figure out how to remove the bumper. You will have to remove the bumper if you replace the grill anyway.
I'm curious how your wrap of the grille turned out? I'm looking to do the same and figured I would have to have it painted. Also, did you find a black star for your grill? I haven't been able to find one and thought about covering it with dark window tint film. If you did change it, please post pics. Thanks.
I got the ring around the emblem wrapped. Black star not really possible since the emblem houses the distronic assembly. I got a piece of smoke film put over the star and it looks a bit more muted now. Don’t have a pic of that though. Will try to remember to take one.
