2023 GT63: Brake Squeal

Anyone else experiencing their brakes squealing when braking at low speeds? Figured it was expected in the beginning but I’m already at 1500 miles and should be well past the break in period.

My GTS does it on stock compounds. Most of the fleet does this down to the V6 and V8 executive sedans. You can switch to ceramic although I don't know why you would on a new car. Tons of metal in the OEM pad, lots of performance and intial torque, they're just loud and it gets worse the bigger the rotors are in the car and less pedal you use. The GLE63's brakes are horrendously loud at low speed stops. On that car you should just brake late and firm when possible. This is not exclusive to MB, the "faster" (lol) Lexus also metal sounds, and BMW's dimpled M Performance rotors have the worst growling noise youve ever heard.

Brake squeal comes down to bedding the brakes and get them hot regularly so the layer of pad material is maintained. I've driven many different AMGs all the way up to the GT BS and I've so far never had significant brake squeal. With my personal car, the only time the pads start squealing is when they are worn. They start squealing a few hundred miles before the brake sensor trips and then after replacing them and bedding them in, they are silent again. The CCBs however can make noise.

The thing is these cars have performance brakes, and they are not particularly happy if you just tool around the city and stuff with the brakes effectively remaining cold. In the cold state the brakes operate in the so-called abrasive mode and slowly scrape the pad material layer off the rotor until the pads are down to scraping on he bare metal. These cars are really not stop&go, commuter or city cars. You need to drive them in anger regularly and get the brakes hot. Driven the way they are meant to be driven will get rid of the brake squeal.

BTW, in 2018 Porsche put out an educational video on brake squeal, because they get lots of complaints from customers about noisy brakes. It's almost comical to a degree, but the gist of it is that some brake squeal is impossible to avoid in high performance braking systems due to the sheer number of unpredictable influences. Driving style is one of them given that the typical buyer rarely actually does performance driving in these cars.

Understood, thank you for the answers and reassurances. I live in Downtown LA so it's constant stop/go, guess I'll start driving more aggressively lol

Yeah, LA is pretty much the worst place to drive one of these. Take it up to the canyons above LA and stretch its legs regularly. You are not doing the engine any favors either just idling along in LA traffic. I'd recommend a more suitable car for the task.

Mercedes-Benz and/or Mercedes-AMG should also make a video on this since it is a very common complaint among owners.
Does BMW and BMW M have one?
