Girodisc 2 Piece Rotors

Front rotors warped for the second time in a year of ownership, so I decided to change it up a bit. 550C rotors are the same exact PN as the c63 rotors, so decided to try 2 piece girodisc rotors made for the c63. Only mod was trimming the anti squeak spring on the bottom of the rotor to clear the larger hat. Over 10lbs lighter per corner! Coupled them with centric posi-quiet ceramic pads and things are going great so far, will update after they've been on for a while.

Don't mind the crooked spring, it was just put on hand tight to check clearance.

The trimmed spring, had to leave plenty of room, as you can see from the scratch around the perimeter of the hat...our first go around rubbed a little.

How much were they. Centric rotor are less than $100 each. I also went through two sets of stock rotor in less than 10k miles so I went to centric. So far so good!

They're quite a bit more expensive than that...I paid a little less than $1k for the pair. But as far as two piece rotors go that's actually pretty cheap. ~30% lighter than the solid cast rotors (10lbs of unsprung rotating mass per corner), truly directional cooling veins, plus they look pretty cool. The cooling veins were a big selling point for me, my front right is the one that warped both times...that also happens to be the rotor spinning "backwards" (incorrect cooling vein orientation)...seems a bit beyond coincidence to me. I think the centric are OEM replacements and have the same design, decided to eliminate what (imho) was the problem in the first place.

you are correct. Passengers front side is the problem rotor or calipers. I used to think it was pads.

centrics will pulsate as well. Im on my 2nd set. After 6-9 months, pulsating sensation will return.

my passanger side rotor is also discolored and uneven wear compared to drivers side.

im leaning to replacing calipers... but bases on this thread im going to rethink that solution.

incorrect cooling lines is interesting observation. Pulsating sensation is stronger when rotors are hot.

Yeah...i was pretty much in the same boat...was thinking of doing the c63 caliper swap. Figured I'd roll the dice and try and save a few bucks. If it doesn't work out i can just replace the rings on these and do the caliper swap anyway.

I have a feeling the OEM right rotor is getting too hot because it isn't cooling correctly, then when you stop it's causing pick up on the rotor because excessive pad material pretty much melts onto the rotor when they are clamped to the stationary rotor. Then the material keeps building up over time and causes the pulsating. Hoping that having a passenger side rotor specifically designed to rotate clockwise will keep things cool enough to stop that.

A band aid "improved" design to avoid hardware interference is like Stoptech's slated hardware head.

http://www.hpashop.com/Stoptech-Aero...h-Aero-F8x.htm

Learn how RB's center mount patent design (vs. those traditional surface mount design) sets the hardware below the disc surface to clear the disc surface for any type of possible interference; No modification to pad clip, no worry from future pad wear etc.

Modification free installation & worry free operation is what RB two piece rotors can offer in addition to the durability (both on street and track) that is hard for the competition to even come close.

See this testimonial on RB two piece rotors on Jon's E63 that last more than 100,000 miles.

RB two piece rotors are in stock, PM us for your braking needs.

A similar claim of hardware /hat interference.

My 2014 E550 Coupe has this problem. Hard stops from 60+ MPH and you feel a pulsating/vibration. Not as noticeable at slower speeds but it is very unnerving at higher speeds. I had a full brake job front and rear done less than 5,000 miles ago and the pulsating has returned.

What I don't understand is why? My wife drives a 2013 CLS550 and the brakes on that car are fantastic. No trouble at all.

It is quite odd that it is only on our cars...c63 uses the same exact rotor with no issues. And it seems that the guys who have switched to the c63 calipers on our cars dont have the issue anymore either. Some unfortunate combination of the rotor/pad/caliper and cooling seems unique to the a/c207 chassis. I hoped to attack the cooling portion with these new rotors...crossing my fingers they stay true past the 5-6k mile mark...

Where did you buy the centrics? Are the front rotors the same between the '14 e550 coupe and sedan? Most of the places online I have checked, just list "e550 base" or "e550 4matic" as options...is the E550 base the same for sedan and coupe?

OEM. All work was done by my Mercedes dealer.

Just to update, the dealer replaced my front rotors and pads under warranty a couple weeks ago and braking seems fine now. We will see how long they last this time.

I got them through Amazon! They are the same on the E550 coupe and sedan at 360mm rotors up front.

Well, the rotors have been on for a little over a year now. Good and bad news. Good news is...no warping! They've been flawless in that department. Bad news is the fitment...started to have some rubbing issues again as the pads wore down, with the hardware this time and not the hat itself. Was able to find another solution with the help of the people over at racingbrake though, will post up a new thread with those details!

Thank you so much for sharing your experience of two different two piece rotor designs - Between RB's center-mount and others' traditional surface mount design.

A better design that you can see and benefit from it, not from marketing and subjective opinion.
