Hi guys i hope someone can help me i have this camshaft adjuster noise on start up , i have consulted a few people some claiming its a stretched chain which i kinda differ on the noise started after i did an oil change and its starting to irritate me a but , do these adjusters become loose due to load or its a normal wear and tear item , my car is 2008 with 109k on the clock which is baby mileage for. 9 year old car
my car is modified running a 125 shot progressive nitrous system
, Custom Headers , Full exhaust . Heat spacers , filters stage 3 software
any suggestion would be welcome on how to remedy the situation
From what I've read, most people try 5W 40 oil to help remedy either tappet or adjuster sounds. But it's only a temp fix tbh. Only way around it is to replace and at your miles, it's probably about right tbh. I might do mine next year.
Keep us posted if you do replace them. Car should runner better with them replaced too

no issue with car it runs strong still , i am not sure which adjusters the top one or the exhaust ones
Thanks but can i drive the car with that start up rattle though?
I'll tell you this iv had the rattle on occasional startups for 2 plus years. Had adjusters replaced still had the noise. Told it was normal by multiple dealers. Debatable probably. I can tell you I have not had any issues driving it. Pulls Hard runs great.
The main cause of this issue is oil starvation on the intake camshafts personally i dont have much faith in the factory 5w 40 more so on a high performance engine also once u modify it u need to up your oil since camshafts and adjusters rattle due to the oil not lubricating enough on the intake camshafts but lubricate well on the exhaust side as the oil drain back my question therefore is if i change to 10w 60 could i possibly cure the rattle as this will mean better lubrication as the jets that spray on the intake will spray a slighly better , heavier oil
just a q...
i dont think most of these people realize the noise you are talking about. The adjusters make a rattling/ratcheting noise at cold start for 0-3 seconds and go away. The lifter noise is a constant rpm based ticking that will slowly work itself out in a few seconds to a few minutes once the the lifter pumps up. Both are caused by oil pressure bleed down. Yes you are ok to drive the car, however its a problem and the sooner you get it fixed the better.
If the noise is constant cold & warm this might mean the camshaft is hitting/eating thru the lifters. I've seen this issue on early m156s, don't know if it's applicable to 08 and later engines.
The loud startup noise from the Adjusters is nothing to worry about, if you don't like the noise, put new Adjuster in but either way it's not going to effect anything. The loud continuous noise from the Lifter Buckets and Cams, that's a real problem.
