Awesome post my friend and really inspirational for myself who is just starting to get into doing some upgrade work myself. I totally Geek out on this stuff so thanks for sharing. I need your advice as I do have the same 2002 G500 also and I wanted to upgrade to a G63 dual muffler exhaust setup. Is there a particular G63 year that may be more 'economical' or are they all the same? I do like the G63 AMG rumble and I read that they best thing to do is just get OEM G63 dual exhaust mufflers. What are your thoughts on upgrading Mufflers from G500 to G63 amg? Many Thanks!

Thank you
If you want G63 exhaust I recommend doing just the mufflers. Any OEM 2014-2017 will work. You can try G55 mufflers but I'm not sure if they are different from G63 or not.
It should be a fairly simple swap out. You might need to purchase G63 muffler bracket for the back.
The sound is very similar to G63, nice clean rumble.

Last couple of days I have been working on removing the dash so I can prep it for reupholstery. OMG... what a pain in the butt. They sure did not make it a simple process. Without any instructions anywhere online or any idea where to start, I took it one step at a time and finally was able to slowly, carefully, making sure not to damage anything, I was able to wiggle it out.
I think I will reassemble it in a slightly different matter. It will take some planning... but I'll get it done ))
If anyone has any questions on what this process entailed, you're more than welcome to ask me. Im sorry i did not take any pictures of the process for posting (it was a bit frustrating and I was concentrating on making sure I do it right without breaking anything) but I was taking a lot of pictures of what I was disconnecting to make sure I know how to reassemble it.

It looks scary but in reality its not so bad, as long as you put all the wires back where they are suppose to go, it will be fine. Some of them were zip tied to the vents all over the place, ill need to make sure I put then back where they belong.
Im also eager to have it all back together, we all will be popping champagne ))

Has the upholstery company sent you over an estimate for the total cost? I'm interested in also ordering from them. Maybe we can get a deal done if we both purchase. Are they local to you?

They are local here near Seattle.
Its not a straight forward re-upholstery. I will do allot of work myself. Im making all the templates. I am providing leather hides. They will do seats from start to finish. They will do dash upholstery from start to finish. They will only stitch together leather for doors. B-pillar and I will glue leather on to doors myself.

I'd be interested in them doing this for me as well. I'd even be willing to ship the parts to them, i.e. dash, seat covers. PM me if they are willing to make a deal on two sets. I can provide the material as well. It's been brutal trying to find anybody down near me to do this. Most people only order from aftermarket suppliers and install, none of which have G wagen templates. If I'm going to have to send my car out anyways.... I might as well just send the parts. make sense?

I was actually wondering about the same thing. I was wondering if I could have them make some pieces like the center console and doors. Maybe if you don't want to organize things for people, you could let us contact them directly? I don't want to ask for favors in the middle of your huge project.

I will talk to him when I see him later this week or early next week and I will see if he would be willing to do jobs for you guys. If he says he's ok with it, I will send you PM with his contact info.

OK, so I guess we know what you did this past holiday weekend, then. G is risen!
I kinda wish you mentioned the dash removal to me, Alex. I'd have shared the numerous videos I have with you that were made by M-B for their techs. I cannot remember where I found them for the life of me but I downloaded 10-15 of them for the entire interior (IIRC).
I'm sure you have plans already but I can't help myself again; replace the HVAC actuators while you're in there. The little plastic gears in them tend to go and it would be a complete shame to have to go back in. BTW, note where each one goes (by coloured plug and add a number 1-8 on the actuator) so they can go back into the same location. The little chipsets in them hold values for range of motion and I was able to remove, refurbish and replace mine while avoiding STAR Diagnostics on the HVAC. Jsut a thought.
Otherwise, well done again and thank you, thank you for sharing.

No, on the weekend I stayed home with family.
That's alright, I figured it out without breaking anything )
I just plan to replace the little plastic levers that move the flaps. Never thought about replacing the actual actuators... I'll give it some thought.
Thanks

Hey, absolutely amazing work done so far! If you have time perhaps also attach a gun turret, really all that G is missing.
Quick question, I have a 2002 and would like to upgrade the electronics to the 2008+ models. Can I just purchased 2011 G550 command centre, top and bottom wood panelled climate controls, 2010 G550 odometer and just plug it all in? Or will it be far more intricate?
Thanks

Honestly I don't have all the answers to your questions.
I purchased 2010 W463 hazards button block with wood trim. W203 command unit. W209 climate control unit and W203 AMG cluster.
I believe that hazards block and climate control unit should be just plug and play.
Cluster might need some programing.... ill see what it looks like when I plug it in.
Not sure if I will need to change the plug or get adapter for the command unit. I did some research on it, and from what I understood I might need a adapter plug.... Ill know more when I start putting it together....

*Edit: Only problem with these units would be the quality. They do however come with some form of a warranty.

The reason I purchased W209 climate control unit is because its the only one that had REST button, and thats what W463 has. There are allot of similar units from W203 or W209 that don't have REST button. Im not sure if its a big deal, but I wanted it to have it...
Yes, I saw those packages that sell it all. I just figured I can collect needed pieces on my own.
I wanted to stay with OEM command unit. Im not big music person or I will probably never use the navi on it, but I wanted to have it look stock.
