W220 S500 Violent engine noise

Hi Guys,

I noticed a little ticking and clicking sound recently here we are 50 miles later and it is a violent clunking. I assumed it could be a sized pulley maybe a tensioner a/c pump? P/s pump?0- but after digging and talking to people this might be an timing chain related issue. Here is a video, has anyone seen something like this? I'm not sure and won't be able to take it to the shop until Sunday.

The noise is constant and the car drives smooth as butter.

Thanks

Mine sounded similar with the supercharger pulley wobbling, granted we do not have the same engine. Check all the pulleys.

Found the culprit:

What are my options:

Shorter belt?

New pulley? Or do I need the whole damn compressor.

This thing louder each drive it's getting ready to fly off!

Yes, you will need to replace the entire compressor. The W220 compressor does not use a clutch pulley with a separate bearing like most vehicles. The compressor always turns with the engine - no clutch. The function is controlled by the computer changing the variable displacement of the compressor.

The pulley does contain an emergency disconnect system. There is a set of small rubber cushions between the pulley and the compressor shaft. If the compressor locks up, the rubber cushions shear, so that the drive belt can continue turning after the shaft stops. That is probably the noise that you have been hearing.

While you are replacing the compressor, inspect the idler and tension pulleys very carefully, and replace any that do not turn smoothly and silently. Also check the other belt-driven accessories for roughness or noise.

They aren't that expensive, just buy a new compressor.

Thanks guys for all the input. Will be getting an a/c compressor.

I'm wondering though what could be the reason for this all of a sudden. My AC stopped blowing air the same time as well..Low R-134A? Or did my whole control unit go kaboom and shorted the signals to this (always engaged compressor) and blower same time. I need to go check my blower right now and see why it's not blowing. A/C diagnostics showing code 1000 which is control unit fault.

02 with 115k now.

Thanks

I know 00-01 has a different front nose and a different design where it doesn't engage always until it's on.

I'm after 9/2001 production.

Mine is this one(a00123000011), I'm noticing the ones for sale have a face plate is different that's for sale I think these should work right? According to rock they are interchangeable.

Mine

Looks like a cover.

I've actually removed and replaced those pullies before, that outer shield is just basically a dust cover.

Yep sounds good. I ordered a shorter belt to bypass the ac for now while I diagnose the rest of the system.

Same happened here

same thing happened to me a few weeks ago when I was traveling....the compressor was coming apart. I had no choice but get a dealer to pop one in at $1300....

ouch!, I didn't know those cars don't even have a clutch on the a/c, I always wonder why they are "on" all the time.
