Deep Dive: Digital Vehicle Key (2022-2025 EQS)

A Deep Dive on the Digital Vehicle Key (2022-2025 EQS)
@runbuh , your recent question about the 2025 Digital Vehicle Key is an excellent one, and it touches on one of the most misunderstood and inconsistently implemented features of the past few model years. The full answer deserves a much deeper dive than a simple reply, as it gets to the heart of the frustration many of us have felt.My own experience—not having this function on my '23 450 or my current '24 580 Sedan, despite it technically existing in the owner's manual—is a prime example of this confusion. To clear up the ambiguity once and for all, I've put together a definitive, multi-part guide on the complete evolution of this feature, including how to check what your specific vehicle actually has.
Here is a comprehensive, analysis of the Digital Vehicle Key for the EQS Sedan, from its murky beginnings in 2022 to the standardized system in 2025.
Part 1: The Pre-2025 "NFC Digital Key" — Theory vs. Reality (2022-2024 EQS Sedan)
For the first three model years of the EQS Sedan, Mercedes-Benz listed a "Digital Vehicle Key" based on NFC (Near Field Communication) technology. The Theory: How It Was Supposed to Work
As documented in the official owner's manuals, the system was designed to allow a compatible smartphone or a dedicated credit card-style NFC key to operate the vehicle.- To Unlock: You had to physically hold the smartphone or tap the NFC card against a specific sensor on the driver's door handle.
- To Start: You then had to place the phone or card in a designated spot in the center console—the rubberized tray with a key symbol on it.
The Reality: Why Most Owners Never Had It
The inclusion of the NFC Digital Key was elusive and highly inconsistent. Its absence on a specific vehicle was not a defect, but a result of a variable production strategy influenced by several factors:- The Semiconductor Crisis: The primary culprit. From 2022 through 2024, extreme supply chain volatility meant that the specific chips and hardware modules required for this feature were not always available. To avoid production halts, vehicles were often built without certain non-critical components.
- Production Date: A direct result of the supply issues. An EQS built later in a model year (e.g., Q3-Q4 2024) had a statistically higher chance of having the necessary hardware installed than one built earlier in the same model year.
- Market & Region: The feature's deployment was not uniform globally. It was often provisioned for the European market before being considered for North America.
- Packaging & Trim Level: The feature was never truly "standard." It was typically bundled within the highest-level Pinnacle trim or other optional packages, and even then, its inclusion was not guaranteed if supply chain issues arose.
- Software Provisioning: Even in rare cases where the hardware was present, the feature still needed to be enabled via the Mercedes me connect services, adding another layer of potential failure.
Part 2: The 2025 "Full Rollout" — A Standardized UWB Revolution
The 2025 model year marks a complete reset. It is the true, standardized launch of this concept, underpinned by far superior and more reliable technology.- The Technology: The new system uses a combination of Ultra-Wideband (UWB) and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). As a key member of the Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC) that standardized this tech, Mercedes-Benz is now implementing it fully. UWB provides precise, secure spatial awareness that NFC cannot.
- The Experience: This enables a true passive, "phone-in-pocket" experience. The car securely detects the precise location of your phone, unlocking as you approach and allowing you to start it without ever removing the device. It's the convenience promised by "keyless" technology, finally realized.
- The Rollout: This is a full, intentional rollout for the 2025 EQS Sedan. It is a headline feature with standardized hardware, indicating that owners can now reliably expect to receive and use it. This system also seamlessly enables the "Smart Key profile control," where the car recognizes who is approaching and adjusts seats, mirrors, and MBUX settings automatically.
Part 3: The Owner's Guide — How to Check YOUR Car's Functionality
So, how can you determine for certain what functionality your pre-2025 EQS has? Here is a definitive, step-by-step diagnostic guide.Step 1: The Software Check (Easiest Method)
Check the Mercedes me connect app on your smartphone. If your car is provisioned for the feature, you will see an explicit menu option for "Digital Vehicle Key." If this option is entirely absent from the app, your car is not enabled for the feature.
Step 2: The Physical Hardware Clue (The Key Symbol Tray)
Look at the rubberized tray next to your cupholders. If it has a key symbol molded into it, your car has the physical NFC reader. This pad's dual purpose is:
- Digital Key Reader: The designated spot to place a phone/NFC card to start the car.
- Emergency Key Fob Reader: A critical backup. If your traditional key fob's battery dies, placing the fob on this spot allows the car to read its passive chip and start the engine. The presence of this tray means the hardware exists; the question is whether it was ever activated.
For documented proof, pull your car's factory build sheet using its VIN. Several free online services can provide a detailed "data card" listing every option your car was built with.
- Recommended Tools:
- mb.vin
- lastvin.com
- How to Use Them: Simply enter your 17-digit VIN on their website. The service will generate a list of your vehicle's features and their corresponding 3-digit option codes.
- What to Look For: You are looking for codes associated with this functionality. While the specific code for the full Digital Key can vary, its prerequisites often include 14U - Smartphone Integration and sometimes 899 - Multifunction telephony. The complete absence of any of these related codes is a definitive sign the feature was not included in your vehicle's final build.
If ambiguity remains, contact a dealer's service center with your VIN and ask for the "Vehicle Master Inquiry" (VMI) report. This internal document is the most detailed history of your car's exact factory configuration and can confirm with 100% certainty whether the feature was installed and provisioned.
By understanding this evolution, from a theoretically-available NFC feature plagued by inconsistency to a fully-realized UWB system, we can better appreciate the significant leap forward the 2025 models represent.

Thanks, @BenjaminKohl ! That's a great pull.
SA Code 896 is indeed listed as "Pre-installation for Digital Vehicle Key" on many data cards. That's another excellent piece of the puzzle for owners to look for when decoding their VIN. I appreciate you sharing that.

This kind of stuff is well documented for other European cars, even some off-the-wall stuff:

The Best of Mercedes & AMG
To turn it off: Settings -> General -> Carplay -> MBUX #####
What I believe happens is that Carplay hijacks the Bluetooth connection, preventing the pairing process from completing. I wasted an hour before I had this epiphany. I currently have a 2025 EQS 450v4

For mine it says EQS sedan / Apple / iPhone 16 Pro:
This device is supported for the selected vehicle with the State of Construction starting from: CY23/2 (804+054), 09/2023.
My car has both options 804+054 in the built sheet. That means it should have the hardware. Especially it was built 05/24. The problem is due to being MY24, the code 896 was never added. I read in German forums that some users are reporting EQE's built in 03/24 are using the Digital Vehicle key without any issues.

Probably MBUSA could enable it, but they are probably only interested in getting 25 sales with the "new feature". I'd understand if the hardware wasn't in the vehicle, but it seems to be only a software issue. I would even pay for it like the Dashcam if the store offered it. It's such a cool feature and helpful if you go to the beach, you can keep the Apple Watch on you and swim and not have to hide or worry about someone stealing your car key.
It must have something to do with the fact that we used the valet driver. J_Boxer or anyone else have an idea why or a solution?
