I'm a new E-Klasse owner and from my limited experience, the Auto start/stop function is on in ECO, Comfort and Sport modes. You will have to press the "A" button in the center console to disable the function before every drive. It seems that the Sport+ mode has this function "off" automatically but be ready for high revs and greater gas consumption. I'm still playing around with my settings but I think that for Individual mode, I'll set it to comfort mode and disable the auto start/stop function and have this as my default. I'll be switching between that and Sport+ depending on the road and kind of mood I'm in for driving. Hope this helps!

For some reason, Mercedes still makes their cars default with the Auto stop/Start feature ON. You have to push the button every time you start the car if you want to turn it off. It might be a tiny issue, but it's actually one of the things that's keeping me from getting a new Mercedes right now.

BMW initially did the same thing a few years ago when it was first introduced, but after numerous complaints from customers BMW changed the settings so that the car remembers the last setting and stays in that setting until the driver changes it. So in the BMW, if you turn the Auto Stop/Start OFF it will stay OFF forever until you push the button again to turn it back ON. I wish Mercedes would do that.

My current "d" is the first car I've owned with start/stop.Thankfully mine remembers the last setting so the only time I have to worry is when I engage "eco pro" on the Interstate...which engages start/stop.If it's that big an issue to you I wonder if pulling a fuse might do the trick.Of course even if it does that could cause other problems.

My understanding is you can only use the Start/Stop in your EPA test (and so get credit for the mileage gain) if it defaults to "on" every time you start the car.

According to the operator's manual page 135, ECO Start/Stop can be set in the Individual mode.

Of course, you've got to manually select "Individual" each time, so it doesn't save you any steps. (Selecting "Sport" or "Sport+" also deactivates ECO start/stop, but these modes also have to be manually selected each time.)

In the last two days I have been testing the "HOLD" function in the city driving conditions and I noticed the "ECO start/stop" stoped working. The engine is still running at the red light with "HOLD" ON,doesn't matter if it is in ECO or COMFORT mode with the ECO start/stop function switched on... I don't know to cry or to be happy . I don't like the ECO start/stop function either.

I've had the engine turn off while HOLD was active. But I must say, I cannot figure out when the engine will turn off and when it will turn back on -- it seems almost random.

I turned eco start off in individual configuration and put it on that setting, and the the eco start still came back on when I restarted the car...and it was still set to the individual configuration. Is mine broken or is Mercedes-Benz just that determined?

I had a device installed 72 hours after purchase that makes the Mercedes remember the last setting for eco auto-start/off. After all this time I don't even remember what start/stop is like.

Like @CarFan1 , I had the Eco Off OBD flash module from MidCity Engineering on my W205 and it was super-simple and worked great.

As an additional option, if you're someone who likes to DIY and end up with a OBD scanner to do many other things besides fixing the Eco button state, you may want to check this out also:

Isn't something like this configurable in the software that service depts use? Name is escaping me.

I am really thinking about how to get the auto adjusting cruise control function turned off, I've no problem with the system telling what the limit is, but I'm not interested in getting rear ended or causing an accident every time it reads a sign that's unrelated to the road I'm actually on. (Eg ramps).

Benz-ninja seems overkill, perhaps a question for dealer ahead of next service?

The adaptive cruise control setting can be changed by the user.

The speed limit sign reading on my 2018 W213 is poor. It took about a month of sudden braking on the interstate when it mistook the exit speed limit sign for that of the highway for me to de-select automatic speed increase or decrease according to the highway signs. My area ranges from 75 to 60 at various points on the way to the airport. Now I typically set the adaptive cruise at 70 and leave it there. I stay in the right lane except to pass and haven't had an issue.

I think there’s a thread in the W205 forum I read in recently that auto stop start can be set to last used setting using a “Launch” branded OBD/Diagnostics scan tool. I would assume that using the device the appropriate line item can be found for highway sign recognition and its state changed (for those who don’t have Xentry).

I say this as the Aussie regulators do not allow automatic speed adjustments based on speed limit recognition. So MB Australia has limited the function on our cars by just displaying the read speed limit on the dash and HUD; and it does not allow the cruise control to adapt and change the driven speed to match the speed limit that the camera reads.

And from the W213 AMG forums, this thread has clear instructions too:

I have a 2023 E450 Cabriolet (W213//A238) and just emailed (April 27, 2026) the vendor for the "Launch X431 Elite 2.0 bidirectional OBDII scanner for Mercedes-Benz" concerning the use of their tool for changing the ECO start/stop function and was told that it was not compatible for that purpose. Back to the drawing board.

Contact MidCity Engineering. They probably have a couple options.
