Question Panoramic Roof - Yay or Nay?

I am in the process of ordering a MY22 GLE450 and trying to decide whether or not I should get the panoramic roof. Here is some background on our use cases/location:

- Northeast US
- Car is kept outside 100% of the time
- It will see rain/snow/branches/etc falling on it (a lot of oak trees covering our driveway)
- We drive 15-20,000 miles/year
- Only 1 child who is 11

I dont know how much the glass roof weighs (probably a lot) vs the standard. I also dont know how durable this glass is and how forgiving it will be considering the car is kept outside all the time. I would like to hear everyone's opinion on this especially those of you who have had this in their car. I unfortunately have not been able to find a car with panoramic roof so I dont even know how it will look like.

Our car will be either white or mojave silver with beige interior (and beige headliner).

Thanks

Yes, to the panoramic roof.... i think it's a no brainer. When the covering opens is it really makes the cabin "feel" bigger. The option for it is not even that much 1k extra? I live in the FL and its hot all year round and it still stays pretty cool. My GLE also has the roof rails. I have had no issues with my GLE and it stays pretty much outside all the time.

Can you open the roof (front) without having to move the entire cover back? In other words, can the rear seats be under the shade and fronts under the sun (and roof open)?

So this would be the option of having a regular sunroof like behavior/usage.

Based on your requirements/conditions, NO to the Pano.

No to both questions.

We opted for no pano mostly because my wife doesn't like driving with the sunroof shade open, so it would be pointless to have an even bigger piece of glass to keep covered. Also, we thought it would be quieter and more stiff with the regular sunroof.

^^ The above is correct. You cannot have the roof open and the back part of the panel shaded where the passengers are. You can keep the roof closed and have the shade cover shaded half way or anywhere you stop it.

Yes, the regular sunroof can be slid back with the cover, tilted open at the rear with the inside shade either closed, fully or partially open.
Or you can slide the interior shade back while leaving the glass part closed.

On previous cars, we have had two small sunroofs, four panos, and we chose a standard sunroof for our Special Order '21. I'm glad we didn't get another Pano.

.
We love the panoramic roof, my toddler sits in the back (and my wife sometimes with him) and it really makes a difference to how spacious and airy the car feels.

Regarding opening halfway, I sometimes close the shade partway so that it 'feels' like a normal sunroof (e.g. if the sun is overhead and blinding my toddler in the back). So you do have flexibility over how much of the glass is covered while it's closed. But not as much regarding how much is covered while the glass is open (to let in air instead of just light)

I'm also in FL. Based on my experience (12 MB cars in the last dozen years, all 12 in FL and all but 2 with Pano) cars with Pano are much hotter when parked (1hr or less under the FL sun is all it takes, 10 out of 12 months a year), and still noticeably warmer even with A/C on while driving.

I have the pano roof, and just verified I can not slide it back (partially of fully), or tilt it up, without the shade retracted...I thought I could.

Plus with no Pano you get the sunglass compartment. 🤗
I have had both and prefer no Pano for the reasons others have mentioned.

Ha! I didn't even realize that I don't have a compartment for sunglasses anymore. Of course, I've had the new car for only 10 days and I have been out of town 5 of those days. I never used it in my previous car though.

I split my time in LA and Palm Desert CA where the heat reaches 120.
GLE 450 Panoramic sunroof for me I love it.

Ron with Pano you still get sunglasses compartment I have it on mine. It’s if you order that visual hand wave gimmick inside forgot what it’s called then you lose the sunglass compartment.

I live in NYC, have an 11 year old and he loves being able to see out of the Pano roof. I also have the sunglass compartment. I sat in a GLE with the standard sunroof and it just felt too small. Love the pano roof and I had the entire car done tinted (lowest tint) with the llumar ceramic tint and it really cuts down the extra heat load.

It's called the MBUX Interior Assistant.

My rear seat passengers love the pano roof. They say it makes the GLE feel so much larger plus they have a better view. I've never noticed the car being hotter with the pano roof, I just did a 1500 mile road trip , with the GLE sitting in the baking sun, and we never noticed the inside being hotter.

I also have the acoustic/heat blocking windows so that probably helps too. Getting into the GLE after it was baking in the sun wasn't anywhere near as hot as getting into my Q7.

Thanks, it’s a worthless option anyway and Mercedes hasn’t added any functions to it since launch. I skipped Interior Assistant this time.

I agree interior assistance is a waste and I’d much rather have the sunglasses holder. I do like our pano roof though. I’m am disappointed though in how small it opens compared to how large the glass area is. Our pano in the e class feels much bigger when it’s open.
I’d go for it though just on wow factor of resale.

Oh Pano roof enhances car's look without a question, especially if a car is a light color (like Op's white or silver). That is why I got Pano on all cars it was available on, but I keep cars 95% garaged. However, those 5% when car is baked under unforgiving FL sun, I hate it when I get in.

All personal preferences aside, for the OP because car is going to be parked outside all the time, IMO a Pano is not the best option and under the same circumstances I would go for the standard sunroof.

Yay!

I was skeptical in relation to seat heating and pano roof but my GLE has converted me.

The roof allows a lot of light into the cabin and we love that. We also park the car in covered garages so we do not usually suffer the increased heat.

When I’m in Palm Desert in So Cal I leave driver window a crack open and put a sun protective heat shield on windshield when I have to park outside. Even with Pano it’s not bad getting inside when it’s 120 outside. Exterior is white. On my GLC with pano and black exterior the story is a little different😂
