W212 E63 Suspension

Hi all, my rear shocks have failed and so I am looking at replacements. OEM is crazy for plain old shocks ($840 per rear (PN:212-320-25-30 / 212-320-26-30-64 - Code 488 Car)). I think the front struts will likely being going soon based on what I'm feeling (original equipment at 120k miles), which is even more expensive. I've been seeing folks converting over to a coilover setup, but I'm not entirely clear on how that works. Visiting the KW site I haven't seen a clear indication of which kit I would use to get a close to stock feel / slightly tighter. I'm not looking to really lower the car, just looking for a replacement that provides a solid setup for spirited street driving.

Any thoughts or DIYs that I missed when I searched the forums?

Thanks!

I just had rears installed - pretty much the only viable option is OE (Monroe) - and this is if you can find them. The pass side specifically took us a few months to get our hands on. That said, I was ready to change the fronts as well and the shop said that they could not see a valid reason to replace those at this point (for my car).

When I bought my 2010 E63 three years ago the rear shocks needed replacing and when my Indy told me the price I almost fainted. Bit the bullet and went OEM like he suggested and so glad that I did, zero issues since then and the car rides great. My fronts were also fine just like OldMan's.

W212 E63S AMG WAGON - right rear shock fail

Yes, these are NOT normal; right and left must not be exchangeable due to directionality of the tilt of the short side tube (ADS module? sic.)

OEM Mercedes parts suppliers in USA (that I've searched online and by phone) state the part 2183202230 passenger rear is no longer in production and out of stock, or as several said "on backorder" - a couple have offered them, but cancelled after finding out that they actually can't fine one - one parts fella said there are none in the continental US - leaving the question of overseas unanswered.

This said, any suggestions on how to acquire a new unit, or decent used if that is last option ? rebuild possible?

Problem - right passenger rear has leaked out, looks about like the one Oldman has coffined in the photo above.

Appreciate any suggestions, comments, directions to the shed in Affalterbach where the goods are being held away awaiting discovery, or willingness to part with the part !
Thanks, have picked up a good amount of knowledge and information here!
(left rear looking good, just needing a partner for the right side)

Oldmanandhiscar; given it took you quite a long time to find a source, and I've only been after the part for a month now - would you care to share your source ?
we can offer sincere gratitude at this point, and anything else could be up for discussion....

I just spent around 30 hours finding the passenger rear for mine. A salvage yard in Alberta had one. This is our only option currently for replacing the right rear. When I get some time I'm going to cut my old one apart and evaluate rebuild options. I was able to locate some in Europe and even a full set in Russia. This is definitely a problem and all I did was buy myself a little time, eventually we're all going to need new ones.

So just another reason to sell the car and switch over the a F90 m5. I to had to wait 3wks for a stupid plastic hose from Europe, is starting to get annoying.
