Is the Mercedes ‘service’ a ripoff?
Just took my 2023 EQS580 SUV for ‘service’
has 44k miles and the service light indicator has been on
so I’m working with the SA and he’s like yep it’ll be $760
I’m asking ‘for what, what is being done for $760?’
oh we change the air filter, check brakes, top off windshield washing fluid, give the car a multi point check
this seems like Mercedes way appeasing their dealers with these nonsense service markers

MB espresso is much better than Jaguar-Land Rover espresso which gave me the squirts... and I'm pretty sure Genesis espresso is made from used tires that they grind up.
Parts are ~$250 from what Lazarus says and changing cabin filter requires you have experience as a contortionist so I'm OK with that price.

Less routine maintenance for sure. No oil changes, longer brake rotor and pad life, no engine air filter, no fuel filter, no spark plugs, and no transmission oil change reduces maintenance costs for the first few years. The cost to replace or refurbish the HV battery down the road is not clear. It's definitely expensive to replace batteries in this stage of the EV market. But, down the road I expect there will be affordable options to replace the batteries. The accelerated depreciation EVs are experiencing these days effectively offsets some of the cost of replacing the battery in the future (for owners beyond the original owner).

That cost for that maintenance is insane on an EV. This is all just the dealers trying to hold on to the regular service interval revenue as its the primary profit center for the dealer and it pays their service staff.

To put that in perspectve, and A Service from MB on my gas S560 is ~ $450-600. B Service is ~ $800-1000. That includes oil changes, etc. No way I'm paying the same cost or more to "service" an EV...

1. Change air filters (multiple)
2. Change the carbon filter
3. Change brake fluid
4. Change wiper blades
5. Check HV battery coolant level
6. Rotate tires
7. Check alignment
Parts around $230, total service charge around $500

Never do the prescribed “Service”. Just do the oil changes and brake fluid flush. For the EV, change the filter at the dealer and get a price just for that. The rest is a total waste of money.

I do all my own A & B service work (and keep records), but just curious -- will the dealer sign-off on your maintenance book without doing the "full" inspection?

my dealer also resets the service reminder and just changes the oil (that’s easy to do yourself anyway)

I haven't ever even asked the dealer to sign the booklet lol. I keep all my records.

Out of curiosity - which state(s) are these? I've seen these annual inspections required in some other countries (e.g., New Zealand, where it's called a "warrent of fitness"), but I didn't know it was required anywhere in the US.

I haven't lived in PA for many years, but when I did, the salt thrown on the roads during the winter would disintegrate a car in 6 years. Everything exposed -- brakes, suspension, body metal -- would dissolve leaving very unsafe vehicles.

They have gotten to where they dramatically over salt the roads in the mid atlantic. They spray that salt brine all over the roads when any winter weather is forecasted, and that **** just gets all up in everywhere.
