After market 722.9 pan

Very interesting deep pan I have been following the development.

seems made of cast aluminum, good for heat dissipation for sure.

Zero benefit from this.

heat kills

Since heat kills a transmission very quickly and no doubt Trannys are one of MB’s weak links … anything you can do to run a cooler transmission and fluids will really help the life. The cast aluminum / fins and more fluid is quite a plus in my book. They are still in the prototype stage and should be on the market soon according to the latest email.
I ran a very similar pan on my powerstroke 7.3 Fords that pulled my horse trailer .

I mean I don`t see any solid evidence otherwise either, thats why I`m asking but common sense tells me it would have some benefits.

Mainly because MB engineers didn't do this at the factory level, that's why it's useless... UNLESS you do excessive towing or off-roading. But normal everyday driving, which most here do, I agree it's a waste of money. Most drivers do not push the vehicle hard enough to warrant extra cooling.

There are many many items on the 164 chassis that could be engineered quite a bit better. Lots of horrible designed electronics .. boards laying flat waiting for water leaks to short them out. Undersized wheel bearings for heavy SUV’s. The list goes on and on.
Not sure what the tranny pan will cost but I have changed over 20 ..722.9 filters … many were disgusting dirty fluid that could have been helped with a cooler pan.
I am a typical glutton for punishment and keep driving these beast but right when I think I know most of the weaklinks something new pops up. 😂

Seems like it would make sense to monitor the transmission fluid temperature before venturing into changing the pan. It is surely not zero benefit, but how much benefit? Who knows.

One problem is the fluid fill level is determined by the height of the bottom of the pan. MB in its infinite wisdom eliminated the dipstick - which would have been relative to the transmission body, not the pan. The pan had better be the right shape.

I'm not into it, but I really don't push the transmission.

There is probably a bunch of different ways of explaining the fluid level… I would consider that the level is determined by the white or green spacer that snaps on the drain area. So hopefully the pan manufacturer knows how to determine the proper spacer. It’s not really rocket science and already being 2.5 qrts more……

more material volume would retain more heat, finned or not - esp socially considering you’re supposed to run a bottom guard plate that is going to kill that air flow. This isn’t Evidence per Se but more a riff on the fifth law
of thermodynamics.
