2020 GLS stuck in update mode

2020 GLS stuck in update mode

I finally pressed "OK" to an OTA update last night and it instantly went to the update mode where it's been stuck since (it's been overnight). Any ideas on how I can resolve this? I tried soft-rebooting the command screen - didn't help, right back to the update. With the update in progress, I can't use any command screen functionality - backup camera, music, etc.. I googl-ed online and most people say to wait - it's been overnight at this point though. I tried moving the car to an area with better reception and tried driving it around, neither helped. We just went out of warranty on the car 1mo ago, so trying to avoid a dealership visit (and we have a road trip coming up very soon).

Attached is the screen I'm stuck on. I was going to do a hard reset (disconnect the battery), but I think the battery is a bit hidden on this model, right?

My local dealer would not have an issue with getting this straight gratis. I would give your local one a call. One month is negligible and you are certainly a future customer in their eyes I would think. Good luck!

No dice, local dealers all want to charge.

I tried pulling a couple of the radio/navigation fuses, but it comes back to the update screen every time.

Yes. I never own outside of warranty, we orders a Range Rover to replace the GLS but of course it got delayed and the GLS threw these errors right after warranty was up lol

The two buttons on the center control - I forget which ones, but it reboots everything but goes right back to updates.

You probably did the Favorites button (*) and TEL.

Have you tried holding the volume button? Someone suggested this in another thread but I remember this working for iDrive on BMW!

Yup, favorite + tel. How do I do the volume button one? It's the volume button on the remote or in the center console area? I wish I could just unplug the battery but it seems impossible to get to (under the driver seat).

I tried holding down the volume on the steering wheel and the center console - neither seems to have done anything.

Just curious what kind of update? I've not had any over the air updates on my 2020 since a map update in May. And nothing other than a map update since 8/26/23.

Technically, I just need to disconnect the negative on the battery I think. Not sure if it will solve my problem but a little easier then removing the battery all together hmm

I had what sounds like a similar problem when the new map updates arrived earlier this year.

I had downloaded all the maps onto a thumb drive, and inserted it in the car. It takes a little bit for the car to respond, and while I was waiting a similar pop-up appeared and I said okay.

It seemed to take precedence over the map update and got stuck unresponsive.
I didn't do anything but it was dead until the next day.
At which time the pop-up download had completed, and I reinserted the map update which then took place. Successfully. (I had removed the thumb drive overnight.)

Maybe you're download interrupted some other activity.

It sounds like you just waited it out or did you do anything else to have it finally finish? How/where did you download the maps to the thumbdrive? I wonder if I should try sticking a thumb drive with the maps into the car to see if it does anything.

I'm not opted-in to Mercedes-Benz Connect btw, so I wonder why it even started the update. I also wonder if I subscribe if Mercedes would provide some complimentary help with this issue? So far, the typical dealerships I go to all want an arm and a leg just to diagnose it.

i was under the impression that software updates are automatic. The dashboard is for map updates.
Page 335 of my manual talks about all the things that can go wrong with a software update. Including suggesting driving carefully to a dealer. I would say go to a dealer. Worry about the payment later. This is a failure on the car and a safety issue. MB will work with you.

I agree, however, local dealers are all quoting crazy amounts just to "diagnose". I'm worried that they'll charge me thousands just for showing up (or at least that's what MB of Paramus is saying). Maybe I should try reaching out to MB CS first since the dealers all just want to rip me off at this point. This is our 4th Mercedes too, and all serviced regularly with MB of Paramus.

Don’t know what a crazy amount is. Again, deal with it. Get it resolved, then deal with MB. If you call MB before, they just going to refer you to a dealer.

The MBUX hard-drive is probably going bad. Likely nothing you can do except have a dealer check it.

Yeah, seems like the only option. Frustrating as we're getting a new car in a few weeks and were supposed to trade this one in. Thanks.
