I just ordered a set to replace my PS 4S's. The fronts are getting close to the wear bars. The rear still have meat but I'm a little leery of having different compounds on the two axles. They're supposed to have more dry grip and 300 wear rating. Sounds too good to be true. Anybody have them?

BTW, it's PS S 5. They changed the naming scheme but my fingers haven't caught up.

The PS S 5 (notice they changed the nomenclature. It's not 5S, it's S 5) is only available as OE tire at the moment, not aftermarket. So since AMG is using them on the newer vehicles, I guess they are becoming available in the needed sizes for older vehicles. But this is to say that not many people have experienced them yet. My understanding is that the PS S 5 incorporates a lot of the learnings that Michelin made from developing the BMW Star marked PS4S for the M3/4. As opposed to the aftermarket PS4S, the BMW Star variant uses 4 compounds and is based on the Cup 2. I've got the BMW Star variant PS4S on my C63S Coupe and it's a phenomenal tire. I wish this is what the PS4S were from the outset. If the aftermarket PS4S dialed it up to a 110% from the stock Pilot Super Sport, then the BMW Star dialed it up to a 130%. Steering response, handling and grip is all up a couple of notches, so I expect the PS S 5 to be fairly similar. The only caveat is that the added dry performance comes at the cost of reduced wet performance, but here in NorCal with only about 60 wet days on average, wet performance is not something that matters much for me. It'll be interesting how the wet performance of the S 5 compares. Wet vs dry performance is always a balancing game and BMW deliberately emphasized dry performance, so it's possible that the S 5 has reduced dry performance compared to the BMW 4S, but increased wet performance, but then AMG will have done its own thing with the MO1 variant.

I posted the Tyres Review video of the BMW Star 4S a few times, so if you haven't seen it already, I can post it again. That should give you an idea of where the PS S 5 will be relative to the PS4S.

Thanks. But I just ordered a set from Tire Rack, so it's available. I was mainly asking if any E63 owners had them yet and what their experience was.

It is unusual for Michelin to release a new tire through OE channels only, and not make it available in broader sizes to the aftermarket. I've long suspected that Michelin essentially took the BMW 4S with perhaps a few minor tweaks and made it available to other OEMs in the form of the S 5 and they are largely the same tires. Michelin spent 2 years developing the BMW 4S and if you look at it, it really is a different tire. It's not really a 4S anymore. They changed the internal construction and the compound over the aftermarket 4S, going from 2 compounds to 4 compounds like the Cup 2.

Tire Rack has 10 different sizes listed already including 265-35/R20 and 295-30/R20.

They are all OE tires. Mercedes, Porsche and Aston Martin. Except for two sizes. 245/40R21 and 275/35R21. They are both listed as SL tires with 96 and 99 load rating and not Z-rated. So, not sure what those are all about. Looks like an error.

Yep the 295 is the OE front tire for the GT63 coupe. Tire Rack doesn't yet carry the 305 rear. Not sure which car uses the 265. Could be the C63 E.

I think the theory is that all sizes so far are OEM for some current model, with excess made available aftermarket.

Exactly, these are all sizes used on current models. They will happen to overlap with some older models that use the same sizes, just like the BMW Star PS4S happens to match the stock 19/20" sizes and load rating of the C63S coupe stock tires. Keep in mind, the size is only one aspect. You need to have the correct load rating, too.
