R129 Appreciation at Any Age

I drove up to a fast food drive-through and placed my order. While waiting in line to pay at the first window, a mother and her three children walked between my top-down SL and the car in front of me. The two older children - girls about 9 and 11 years old - both stared wide-eyed at my car as they walked by. The older girl finally looked up at me and said, "Wow! What a beautiful car!", and her sister said something similar.

Future SL owners I would wager.

I've never owned a car that received so many compliments. All I could say was, "Thank You!"

We have a 1996 SL600. We brought her to Chevron to get the oil changed and to get her air filters changed. When we pulled in, we were immediately hounded by the guys that worked there.

Some of the guys said "Wow, you have a V-12, it must pull like a ***** on the freeway." Another guy said "This is one of the most beautiful cars I have ever seen or worked on."

But the quote that sticks out in my mind the most "It must be as fun to drive as it looks."

Overall, The 129 is one of the most beautiful automobiles ever produced. It has an excellent power to weight ratio, and it also holds its value fairly well for a car that it almost 10 years old. And the soul that it has. Every thime I walk by her, she says "Hello. Would you like to go for a drive? How long? How far?" That is something you just cant get any where else. And that is what people see in a car like that. They see that you have class, you have style, and most importantly, they see that you are an average joe like them, and that they can someday possibly live the legend that is the 129.

On my last trip I stopped at a pub in the country and a bus had just pulled up. A load of pensioners jumped out and a couple of old ladies came up to me and said how much they liked the car, nice colour, lovely shape etc... and one of em (who must have been well into her 70's) said, 'Nice alloys!'

I am a 129 fanatic. I have driven nothing but Mercedes for 30 plus years and now at age 76 I am enjoying the ride of my life in my 98 SL500. I am for the first time truly in love with an automobile. Later, JOE

I was on my way to Wilmington, NC one weekend and stopped at this diner off the highway in some backwoods. I took a window table so I could keep an eye out on my car while eating. A group of older men and women, while walking toward their cars, decided to have a peek of mine. They were looking all around, peeked inside the cabin and just flapping their jaws. Would love to hear what they said, but their body language told me what I needed to know

My problem is guys [and girls] chasing me and asking if the car is for sale.
Specially when the top is down..
The other problem is girls asking for rides, many times not your wife!!!
But then I don't think these are problems,really...

Not exactly a "positive" comment but my incident occured at a McDonalds drive-thru window. As I approached the window, I heard one of the male workers say, "Damn! He's driving a nice car! I should go out and jack him!" to a coworker. Probably assumed otherwise since I refused to buy a quarter pounder at regular price (promotion for two burgers for $2 or $4 ended) and substituted my order for some dollar items.

a not so good reson to have a nice car when you are a kid is that a lot of people make fun of you for it. every couple of days people always call me names for having a red merc conv. it very interesting on how much people judge you on what car you drive. and how much they think it cost. when infact mine was just as much as a fully equipped Honda Civic!......but ill take the SL
