SL/R129: slight burning smell
slight burning smell
I just got my sl back from the painters! It looks hot, ill get pics up soon
as i drive it now i notice a slight burning smell like brake rubbing. Before i sent it in the parking brake had failed, and i still need to get it fixed.
do you think the smell is just from it sitting for 3 mos while getting painted? or is it the parking brake? or something else
ill take it to my mech soon also, jus want to go in with some background

Got same smell in my 92 500SL
I just took delivery of my 1992 500SL which sat for about six weeks in a shipping terminal before coming to me. First thing I noticed was a slight burning rubber smell around the engine compartment and inside the car. This seems to have mostly gone away after about 50 miles of driving although I thought I noticed it just a bit when I opened the hood today. It seems to come from the front driver's side although everything is working fine and the car runs like a runaway freight train (in a good way!) I also noticed that the power steering is a little noisy when the car is ice cold in the morning. Quiets down after about 30 seconds. Possibly related? Just brought the car in to a local mercedes mechanic who works independantly now. Brakes were sounding like pads were in order. Will see what he has to say tomorrow.

Burning Smell may be Power Steering fluid
My mechanic found the high pressure line leaking power steerring fluid and is replacing the line. Not sure yet if this is what I smelled but it would make sense. Nothing else is out of order on the car. I did hear my power steering pump cavitating when the car was first started, but other than that no visible drips. The technician told me it was accumulating in a pan under the engine and he noticed it when he was geting ready to do an oil change. If the smell is gone when I get the car back that will confirm it and I'll let you know.
