SL/R129: Motor Oil

This is not a response to your question but I have been told that Castrol no longer make oil - it is just a marketing name. Shell and Mobil supply Castrol. So any Castrol oil will not be better than any sold by these 2 companies.

Mobil 1 0W-40 is your best bet for gas, and Mobil 1 Delvac 5W-40 for diesel.. But if it's an older motor.. (pre-Mobil 1 era) then Amsoil or other finer quality synthetics will do.. but DON'T use Castrol or other quasi-synth oil.. it's crap.

There's more to synthetic oil than better fuel consumption.
It doesn't break down so easily when hot for a start.
How much cheaper is dino oil? How much is your engine worth?

Just changed my oil, was using Mobil 1 10w30. After 5200 miles, the oil was still a healthy shade of brown. Not incredibly dark like I was expecting. Wanted to continue using the same oil, but the filter was really dirty and I figured if the filter gets changed, might as well change the oil with it.

With the Flexible Service System the A and B services (5 so far in the 80,000 miles) have run about 9,000 miles apart.
That is when the synthetic oil and filters are changed by MB on my car.
I have not seen any other requirement for oil changing.
I'd say I drive very hard at times. I like those 0 to 100 mph flat out acceleration runs from time to time. I regularily employ the highway kick down passing acceleration. I have been known to drive at high speeds when out in the boonies.
Two years ago and again this spring the motor consumed at least a quart of oil in about 5,000 miles each time. Causing the low oil light to come on and require a quart top up.
Is this normal?
