Exclamation Car Won't Start

Drove to and back from work yesterday with no problems. Today, I took the ML, and when I came home my Dad told me something was up with the car. We go to start it, and all that occurs is a rapid series of clicks (sounds like a machine gun) while all the interior lights on the center console flash. A friend is coming by later with jumper cables so we can test if it is the battery, which I presume it to be.

What do you guys think? Battery? Sparkplugs?

Thank you.

Normally you get the sound when the battery is weak. Try to jump it and see if it starts. Maybe you left the interior light on.

It does sound like battery problems, however, jump starting your SL is always kinda risky. The roof module always seem to go bad after jump starts. I would remove the battery and have it recharged just to be safe.

How old is your battery? It sounds like it is getting to weak to crank the starter. Had a similar situation like yours a few weeks ago. Roadside Assistance came out and jumped it for me. I leave a trickle charger on the car since then.

You can jump the R129 like any other car. The only cautions you need to apply is to make sure the "jumper car" is off when you are connecting the cables, start the "jumper car" first after the cables are connected. I confirmed that with the RSA technician.

Jump started the car successfully (motor ran smoothly), except for the fact that soft top wasn't functioning properly. Relieved it is the battery, now just have to replace it.

That's because you need to re-syn your top. It is a trick the RSA tech told me. Many people think that is related to jumping the car. What you need to do is to lower all windows, raise them again. Make sure the car is running and open the top. If you can't get it right, stop by the dealer and have them do it for you. I am sure that's a free of charge service.

Thank you. There's another trick with resetting the ABS ESP and Hydraulic Suspension warning lights. I made a thread some time ago on it, but basically you turn the steering wheel from lock to lock and then back, and the warning lights go away granted it's merely an electrical interference issue.
