R129 Panorama Hard Top Picture Thread

Are there enough R129 panorama hard tops out there to make a picture thread? I'm hoping so. I'll start it off with a photo of mine. San Diego is made for convertibles, and its been a while since I had the hard top on my SL. But it does looks nice, and I really enjoy being able to hear the stereo without the wind. I'll keep the hard top on for a while longer, but sooner or later it will have to come off. What did Vanilla Ice say?

I imagine you are correct. But Ice probably didn't have the opportunity to drive an R129 before he wrote the song.

Somehow, I don't think Ice would fully appreciate a 129. Beautiful car Hotel. The pano is so appropriate for this car. How many miles?

BTW, are you from the Eagles era?

Thank you. I was really hooked on the pano top and probably would not have purchased an SL without one. But I found I liked the open air even more (this is my first convertible), so the pano top sat in my garage for quite a while. The car now has 43,500 miles on it - we use it for weekend fun.

And, yes, I'm from the Eagles era. Hotel California came out in 1976, and I graduated from HS in 1977. 30 year reunion coming up next year -

No more pano top photos? Here's another from the inside showing how much the sunlight is reduced by the tinted glass. But you can still see out and enjoy the light and openness.

Pano Top

Do you suppose a pano top is available for a 1991 300SL? That's just too cool!

I been in a pano briefly and I couldn't believe the openess feel. It's great especially for a bigger guy. Congratulations again on a beautiful ride. Enjoy.

Later Panos May Fit 1991 300SL

The pano top was introduced in 1996 and most of what I've read implies it will fit only on SLs made for the pano top. But here's a thread that states the later pano tops will fit on a 1991 300SL.

I would be very careful to confirm this before buying this expensive top, but there may be hope.

Does the 49 in your nic stand for 1949? I was born in 1959 - 10 years later. Thanks for the compliments on the car. I'm about ready to take the pano top off and enjoy the fresh air again.

LOL. It was Labor Day weekend after all. And it had been two weeks since I posted the request for pano top photos and no one else had posted a pic. Thought I'd post something to get people interested again.

Ok, ok, more pano top pics

I thought I'd have more than this. I understand the pano top can be retrofitted but you need to make some adjustments and change some seals.

Thanks!

Thanks for posting some pics JJrodger. I noticed the SL55 in the first photo has a black antenna! All the SLs I've seen in the US have a silver extendable antenna. Is this a European-only option?

From the plates, I would say the second SL is your car - very nice. Where are you located?

Hi, I live in the North East of England, although nearly ten years ago now I did a similar drive to you along the north California coast (actually went from San Francisco to Napa Valley, Sacramento, Lake Tahoe, Yosemite, Monterey Bay, Carmel and back to San Francisco). Unfortunately I was driving a rented Mercury Grand Marquis not a 500SL...

The black antenna I think comes with the APS30 sat nav system available on very late model 129s, but I'm not sure. Mine has a chrome hirschmann. On some late model cars the antenna has only three stages, the lower two being chrome and the top one being black plastic. No idea about that one, either.

Beautiful Countryside

What a beautiful country. Work sent me to North Yorkshire a number of times, including one 3-month stretch. Living in California, I miss the green rolling hills of Virginia (where I grew up), and northern England is exceptionally rich in such countryside. The pubs were quaint and cozy, and the food and bitter was excellent. We threw arrows with the locals, although we never achieved the same level of skill. But I never could figure out cricket.
