The electrical connector is mounted into the passenger side of the trans, and if you can the car on a lift or jack stands to give yourself room to work, it's easy to replace.

For whatever amount that leaked out, yes. You'll need the so-called ''special tool" to measure the amount of fluid in the trans. AutohausAZ .com has them, as do most of the internet parts sellers.

That said, if your car has 50K +/- miles, consider draining the fluid, torque convertor, and if your **** about this stuff, the trans fluid cooler and lines; replace the filter, add a pan magnet, and you're done.

The 'tool' fuctions like a dipstick. It looks like it's made out of spedometer cable the way it bends.

Pan magnet is the magnet sticks to the bottom of the transmission pan to keep small pieces of metals from coming back to the transmission.

SL500 (1999) didn't come with one but you could use the one from W220. You can even put two in there when you drop your pan (I've had two on each of my Mercedes). O

Part number is 220 271 00 98. It only costs a few bucks each.

I bought my tranny stick for less than $30. It could be hand made but I wouldn't save that much. Also, I have two 722.6 transmissions so I've already save a lot by changing the fluid myself.

If you want to make the stick yourself, make something that flexible enough to go all the way to the bottom of the pan.

From the bottom up, fluid should be 0.5 in. - 0.75 in. when at 25 Celsius degrees and 2.25 in. - 2.50 in. when at 80 Celsius degrees. Remember to measure transmission fluid when the engine is running (in Park). You MUST measure your transmission fluid level precisely to prevent further damage to your transmission.

I bought a laser gun and point at the bottom of the transmission pan to measure the temperature while checking the fluid level. Make sure you measure it few more times after puttting in some mileages before you close the 'red' cap.
