The seller in Japan claims authentic 99 SL55 AMG , it looks like it by interior and engine on photos , but Russian Datacard shows SL500.
Can anyone help with some info ?
Forgot my logon to EPC online catalog (up to date directly from Mercedes, free for USA). I'll check when I get home around 6 tonight, unless somebody beats me to it
Thanks for the info
Is it possible that a car was sent to AMG for tuning after it was released as SL500 and then changed to SL55 without changes in Datacard ?
according to this SL55 was unofficial, you get SL500 with the AMG options so it's possible:
Auch der 1999 vorgestellte SL 55 AMG war ein Manufakturprodukt, der nicht offiziell in den Preislisten von Mercedes-Benz erschien. Den SL 55 AMG treibt der hubraumgleiche modifizierte 5,4-Liter-V8 an, der auch im E 55 AMG (Baureihe 210) verbaut wurde. Der Preis für das Technikpaket (bei angeliefertem SL 500 mit AMG-Styling-Paket und AMG-Rädern) betrug 37.120 DM.
but unlikely:
The SL55 AMG was sold through AMG in the R129 bodystyle from 1998 to 2001 in limited quantity. It was the predecessor of the production R230 SL55 AMG sold from 2002 to 2008. Only about 300 cars in the SL-class were customized by AMG prior to 2002.
and:
If you go to this German R129 Club web site and scroll down you will find that AMG produced a total of 65 of the SL55 R129 between 99-01 with 354 HP on a 129.068 chassis.
This is an interior of this car and it definitely doesn't look like 99 SL500
The instrument panel and ashtray with AMG logo , Leather on dashboard and seats are diferent

I would want to see the AMG engine number stamped in the block before I believe this, cosmetics mean nothing, anyone can buy cosmetics and install them. Wood steering wheel and leather on dash are common to sl600. How do you know that this interior shot isn't from a sl600, where are the engine pic's, and a pic of the AMG eng serial number.
What's different about the seats and seat controls, look normal to me.
Every dash picture of a true AMG conversion car shows white background gauges, where most AMG fakes don't bother with the gauges.
A minor detail I know, I still think the interior picture is from a stock SL600.
If AMG went to the effort of transplanting a SL55 motor into a stock SL500 or SL600 car, wouldn't you think they would pop the cluster and finish off the interior correctly with white gauges that are labeled AMG ?
Wouldn't the owner want to see AMG on the gauges every time he/she looked? For $60K It needs to be perfect
This is not a stock SL500 or SL600 cluster , it's black which is normal for 98 and there is 300km/h max and AMG logo on it.
This is a photo of another SL55
Happy seller.
Iam one of the few SL55 owners and i know the documenation is poor.
BUT, MB has at least updated the datacard with the final engine #.
In this example the car has a stock engine documented, but the correct one is supposed to be a 113.985.
Beside that, i dont think that any SL55 was shipped as MY99
