Keyless Go and 2 Cars

One of the features I love most about my SL is the Keyless Go. I'm curious, if I buy another MB with Keyless, can I get the same key coded to both cars. Aka, carry one key and unlock and drive either car?

I really don't know but will be very difficult to do so. it needs that both cars open and start with the same key

It is indeed possible with the star diagnostic system

Just go to your local MB workshop and tell them to make it happen.

The only problem is they will need all the keys and both cars for at least an hour or so

Cool!!

Trin,

Thanks! I thought it might be do-able. I was reading the keyless tech documenation and it talk about adding keys to a "rail" in the keyless, so I figure you must be able to attach keys to a car (aka say you lose your key). That would be great to have one SmartKey and be able to open/start any of your MB.

Sounds very intriguing...we have two MB's as well, and would like avoid carrying both bulky keys. But what would happen say if we have both cars parked in the garage and you push the unlock or trunk pop-do both cars respond? and if so, how do you avoid that?

WOW, It's really good to know because in the future I will prefere to have another MB with the Keyless system for my wife and use both with the same key.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but this will not work. The keys must match the VIN number of the car it is operating. The keys will not work for two cars.

Bummer

Well, it's sounding like a resouding no. It would be a nice feature though. Too bad they're being short-sighted about it.

It's not possible by just programming key tracks with the Star Diagnosis. It is possible if the two cars in question are close in design and you transplant some "spare" parts from one to the other... but then when I had this idea (quite a while ago when I started collecting MBs), I realized that they park in the same garage, and if I unlock one, all would unlock...

So if the cars are never in proximity, it's probably more useful. Like if I have an E55 in California and another in Europe when I am there.

And, what happens when one of the cars is sold....talk about insecurity. Nice scam though...just sell the car then come by and drive it away and sell it again, and again, ha! No, thank you to this option.

it could be done theoretically but i dont think they would ever allow it due to security reasons (2nd owners, etc.)

That's hardly a security issue for second owners. All I need to do with most cars is go to the drugstore, have some keys made, sell the car and don't give them those keys. Alternately with a Mercedes, go to the dealership, have keys made, sell the car and keep some of the keys, and same problem. It doesn't matter WHICH keys start the car, but the fact that you have ANY keys that start the car then becomes a security risk for a second owner.

Is the key coded for the car or is the car coded to the key?

That might make a big difference for security issues.
