Who says SL500 is slow?

I forgot which thread but someone said "500 engines used to be roar rippin.."
i AGREE...

I drove the Sl500 and I beat a G35 coupe, a Chrysler crossfire and an Audi (think it was a 3.0 A4) this weekend.

SL500 is a fast car!

6.1 seconds to 60 is decent but I wouldn't call it fast by any means. The car is hobbled by being grossly overweight.

Beating the 6 cylinder Audi is hardly anything to brag about.

I think that in the real world 0 to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds. And 340 ft-lbs of torque (even if the SL weighs 4,000 lbs) is still pretty dam fast.

I get caught up looking at SL 55 and SL 600 performance potential ... I want that!

However, as my wife constantly reminds me, why would we need any more power? I can already get my self into a lot of trouble with the SL 500.

I'm just saying....
It is not slow , coz i remember seeing some other thread some ppl mentioning it is not fast enough...

Its not just 0-60 in 6.1 secs..

Im talking about 60-120 as well...its pretty good, it also performs really in my opinion for such a big car esp @ high speeds!
n I was pretty surprised that it would beat a G35 too..

but again, these are just my opinions!

What you compare it to

I can be fast or slow depending upon what it is compared to. Compared to SL600 it's SLOW!

The new line of V8's from MB will help the cause; 4.6 333hp, 5.5 388hp and the 6.3 504hp. The days of the less expensive SOHC 3 valve design are over for MB.

Everything is relative to what you've driven before. I find my SL500 very fast as before that I'd only drive the CLK 230K which doesn't really compare.
Funnily enough the sensation of accelaration from 0 in my Grand Cherokee V8 seems faster, in the beginning anyway....!

SLK 230
speed...

And of course everything is relative on who you are driving against. 80% of people you'd probably fly past anyway and the rest well would you really always want to meet them in a dark alley?

All very true comments - and perception is everything...

but the bottom line is that Pilot20 will always have something negative
to say. So just disregard him and enjoy.

Folks, it's all relative. Having owned an SL500, I know the car is a smooth, high speed (as opposed to high acceleration) autobahn cruiser. Now that I own an SL600 I can tell you that it's fast a hell, causes uncontrollable grins, and will destroy almost everthing out there. If you've never driven a car like that then you have no idea what fast is.

I do not drive my car when it rains for fear of having a pond in my trunk. I think the problem is fix in the newer models.

Happy to burst your sad bubble Pilot....my car is 15 months old and I have never had any water in my trunk. No leaks - just blue skies for me.

...and I never said I feared gray skies....just that I thought you were dismal.
