New 5.0 V8 in 2006 SL ?
I was about to book 2006 SL500 until I saw the article today on the 2006
S Class that a new eight-cylinder unit developing 285 kW/388 hp and a muscular 530 Newton metres of torque from a mere 2800 rpm upwards will already be available at the time of the market launch. It accelerates the S 500 from standstill to 100 km/h in just 5.4 seconds.

Will this new V8 be in 2006 or 2007 SL ?

new engine HP...
i believe the current 5.5L pumps <350HP NA.
i'm no engineer, so be gentle...
will valve set-up changes predominantly be responsible for the added HP?
and do you think that will be the new base US SL powerplant?

to the MB cognoscenti...
if one purchases an MB with let's say brabus-modded engine and transmission, then what are the ramifications for the MB warranty? and who services the car?

I would imagine the 4 valve vs three will help as will the new intake system etc. MB is getting 388 hp from the new 5.5.
There is also a new 4.6 producing 333hp which may be a base engine to replace the S 430 etc

thanks everyone for the feedback.
06 should be at the dealerships in July with sirus as standard. maybe revised tail lights and front grill in 06 or 07.
I think a 06 car with 302 hp will take a huge depreciation hit against the 07 388 hp.
most dealerships in northern california have atleast 4-6 of the 2005 SL500.
I am still undecided about the 06.

on another note, the dealerships in bay area are not willing to talk much about the 06 SL, they seem unusually very quiet and unhelpful even talking about orders. Maybe due to large 05 inventory or engine changes in 06 itself.

engine depreciation...
i agree. given the relative speed with which certain of the current cars have dropped values, one must believe that new engine ranges will accelerate the drops.

If I go to BMW North and I have Dinaned my car, they won't touch it, however BMW Momentum is a Dinan dealer, so they'd love to service my car.
But I wouldn't touch Dinan products with a ten foot pole
