STOPPED on RENNTECH UPGRADE - S**T

I tried to remove the ECU this afternoon, but either I am suddenly learning impaired or my connectors are glued on.

The first connector that has to come off won't come off, I was hoping the black bank around the first one came off with it, but from what I am told that is not the case. I am told to wiggle it loose, but I don't see how that is possible when I can't even grab it.

Anyone have any ideas.

Wish I could just pay someone to take it out and not f**k with it myself. If I go to the dealer who does Renntech, they will give me a hard time on warranty which could be a hard time as it already is.

Glued

Hopefully nothing is glued that was just my sense of frustration, I just can't get that first connector to come out. Always a SNAG!!!

Do you have some needle nose pliers you can try to use to wiggle it out?

Exclamation This is how you do it...

This is a standard Mercedes Benz locked plug. In order to remove this plug take the band across the top and slide it down the side and it will release automatically.

Exclamation Further detail...

Before you release the plug you need to release the housing. To do this you need to push in from the outside on the tab on the top of the wires on the left. That will release the housing around the plug. Then you push the tab on the plug and the band will be free to move all the way down to release the plug.

Ricky

Thanks Ricky, but I think you are combining two connectors into one step. Look at Renntech's site

Goto Renntechmercedes.com

Then click the instructions tab and then ECU Removal.

I think I see what you're talking about. I guess I photoshopped according to the wrong piece.

Try this.

Stephenk,

As I mentioned in other comments, the biggest problem with the upgrade is having to do it yourself. I did it successfully, but then I always built my home computer out of parts for fun, so I’m not put off by oddball connectors. The problem here is that the computer you are having difficulties with is the easy one. The tough one – or at least I thought it was the tough one – is the transmission unit behind the passenger-side footwell carpet. Maybe I just had a hard time because the bracket was a little warped, but the TCU involved some straining and skinned knuckles while I thought the ECU was a snap.

My point is that if you are having trouble with the ECU, you might consider having a professional do the job. An internet search (or even the yellow pages) should uncover a shop specialized in performance modifications for European cars. Even if they focus on Porsches and BMWs, they should have technicians comfortable with kind of procedures in Renntech’s instructions. Or perhaps Renntech can recommend someone in the Tallahassee area.

If you do decide to go ahead by yourself, I suggest that before you unplug the connectors, you label them with tape marked to remind you which one goes where on reassembly. Also, if any of the steps seem non-intuitive, jot a note to yourself so you can reverse the procedure later on. Good luck.

Solution

Think I got a good solution. DerekFSU referred me to a friend of his who is a MB Mechanic, he is going to come over and get these two parts out for me. That's a relief!

Since the RENNtech ECU for these cars is a big ticket upgrade, I go ahead and bump you up to my boss, Neal. Just tell them I told you to contact him directly and he'll give you major priority and service.

You can contact him at info@euroteckmotorsports.com

Stephen: Basically we become the middleman to take care of anything. Just like when you buy a Mercedes, except in the case with the Mercedes, you are limited to buying it only through MB USA. They are pretty much the LOCKED middleman.

Florida Chris: Just follow the instructions above. Sicne it's one of those bigger ticket items, we'd like to make sure our customers are taken care of 110% of the way
