Test drove the SL today....hmmmm

Well...the ride did not turn out as I expected..and still not exactly sure what to make of it. (I think partly because I don't know much about these kinds of cars)

The 500 had the sport package. The ride was rough...really rough. I could feel every single bump on the road. (The road is a relatively new concrete road) Peeled the car out a few times and boy this thing has power...compared to my CLK. It reminded me of my college days driving my friend's 5.0 mustang. (I don't really like mustangs)

I think the ride is...gonna take time to get use to. I did not really like the engine sound, but can't see myself driving the way like I did on the demo.

Also noticed the driver sits really lowdown in to the car. Tried adjusting the seat higher....guess I'm short. (5'-10") Tomorrow the salesman wants me to try the car without the sport package. (I'd want the sport package, looks so much nicer)

Incidentally there was a SL65 with 300miles on it in the show room. The salesman rev'ed the engine some....not too sure I like the sound of a mercedes engine. Something very undefinable about it...can't put my finger on it yet. I really like the sound of a ferrari engine, porcshe, and the mustang saleen. (not saying I don't like this car...just that I think I may have to try and get use to it. It's such a beautiful car)

Did you try driving it with ABC Sport off?
The sport package makes no difference in ride quality EXCEPT for the rims, but that's almost neglible because IIRC non sport is 17" and Sport Package is 18". Not really a big difference.

True, but still it's a BMW. Get a 6-series, or M6 if you can wait.

There is absolutely no difference in the ride between the SL500 Sport Package and the regular SL500. The Sport Package is only cosmetic.

That's more CLK competitor. Maybe CL is you stretch it, but it's hard to overcome the cheap BMW interior. M6 is miles away.

Actually, both wheels since MY '04 are 18". Like Lovin said, it's just cosmetic.

The SL is not a sportscar, it's a luxury car. So the engine sounds like a mix of 5 cylinder, and a lazy v8, because its gonna be silence, relaxed, and comfortable to drive eight hours on a autobahn. " The SL its born in germany, made to eat autobahn after autobahn on the relaxed way" (i've read that somwere in a danish carmagazine.) So go for the SL55/SL65 AMG if you want a sporty drive. sorry about my grammer again

I thought I was crazy when I drove an S65 a few weeks ago and to my surprise, very disapointed in the engine sound. I don't know whether it was those small pistons or the whistle of the supercharger, but it just didn't have the "right" sound. The "55" engine seems to have more of a performance sound that appeals to me. With that being said, I've been told that the new "63" engine is the engine sound that will define engine sound for the next decade. Obviously, this is a subjective view.

The 65 does not have a supercharger, it has twin turbos. The presence of the turbos has a "muffling" effect on the exhaust note. The normally aspirated and supercharged cars don't have this issue.

To each his own, but I am happy with the quieter exhaust note of my 600 in typical driving. It does have a pleasing bark when you punch it though.

Have you tried the SLK55? It has a refined sporty exhaust note. Maybe that's indicative of the direction AMG may take with the "63" you mentioned.

OOPS ! I stand corrected on the "supercharger" error. I still "stand" however on the "muffling" sound. Thanks Jack !

Yeah Mercedes engines sounds bad, they drive bad, you got no car for the money, it haves 200 issues every morning which cost you self your breakfast, and they seems wierd with the Twice-lamp-face-thing..but even with all these critics, you would still better like a SL55, or just a SL500, more than a Lamborghini Murcielago or a M5...it might have somthing with the Gullwing to do ...there is just something about those cars with the star on hood that make you love them all...(they even don't have the star anymore exept of the C, E, and S class, Because what would you think, if you were a pedistrain and colided with a Mercedes engine hood and got the star right into your stomach. Thats why Jaguar don't use the jumping jaguar on the hood anymore...) werid and off topic...two storys mixed in one..like blending a beef and some icecream together..mhhh i would proberly could figure out, to make such a mix, and eat it while i'm watchin Jeramy Clarkson beating up the engine/transmission in a SL65.

Y'all---> <---Me Me---> <---Y'all

Actually I drove the car with ABC on and off...didn't notice much difference...like I said...I think I just don't know much about car like these. But MAN... I love the way the car looks. I just wish the drive was better...I want to say like my CLK, but that would be silly of me....

Interestingly the salesman was the one who told me the sports package rides differently compared to the standard build. The sport package sure finishes the car off nicely though...
