Valentine One and SL Windshield

Has anyone used the suction cup mount for a V1 on an SL 500. The black mesh portion around the rear view mirror on my new "05 SL seems too small to have the V! shoot through. Does it have to shoot through that black mesh area only or is another portion of the windshield ok? Thanks.

I would not suggest you aim the V1 through the black mesh, move it a little further left and down. I just got my Escort 8500, which admittedly is a little skinnier, installed in that location. Also, I found that the suction cups would soon come off the black mesh, so you'll need to make sure the suction cups just adhere to flat glass. Good luck!

Doesn't your car have an area in the windhield (specifically designed for an electronic toll pass device), like 2in by 4in, that was manufactured to specifically NOT have any mesh or UV coatings, etc.? Shouldn't you mount it there for best efficiency? Isn't it in the lower center of the windshield?

If you want to install the unit on the mesh area you'll have to remove the suction cups and install self-adhesive velcro in its place. Works well on my E55 with the Esort just resting on the top of the rear view mirror.

I am not looking to have it right in the middle of the windshield. Any V1 users out there that can answer this on the SL?

I'll let you know soon.....

I just got my SL, and the V1 is a vital bit of kit here in SoCal. Has anyone hardwired one in yet, and does anyone have any recommendations for a great MB specialist for such no-standard things here in the LA area?

Where exactly in SoCal will you use it?

CHP paces on the freeways most of the time from what I've been told.

I guess just on side streets?

I find that many CHPs leave their radar on all the time. Parked by the side of the road writing out tickets, parked while directing traffic, stopped at lights, and, yes, on the freeway. Your detector will alert you whether or not the officer is using the radar to track vehicles, or indeed whether or not he is looking at the display. Some would find that an annoyance, but I find it comforting. At the very least, it's a good opportunity for calibration.

I hardwired mine pilfering power from the dash-top clock. Easy to do.
