Just curious, do you know how many miles you went since the oil was full?

How would you say you've been driving it, easy, medium, hard, or out of control?

This is the first time since owning the car that I had to add any oil to it. I currently have 8381 miles on the car in just under 1 year of ownership. I would say I drive it pretty hard. I don't think a day has gone by that I have driven the car that I didn't get on it at some time during the drive. The car has made a several 1/4 mile track runs too. Going in for "A" service in two weeks.

As stated previously, you need to use an oil meeting the 229.5 spec. From my experience I have only been able to find two brands which meet this spec and are available in my part of the country. One is an Elf product which could be ordered over the web and the other was the Mobil 1 0w-40 which is available at Wal-Mart and the Mercedes dealer. A local dealer recently sold me the Mobil 1 for $4.95 a quart. That is what I'll be usung. If you change your own oil, be sure to use the special "fleece" filter recommended by Mercedes-Benz.

Mobil 15W 50

Hi,
I live in South Florida and go to Renntech for my oil changes. The only oil they will put in my 2005 SL600 is Mobil 1 15W 50. I asked them about the recommended grades of 5 or 10w 40 and they told me the 15w 50 will protect the car the best. It probably doesn't make a huge difference since I change my oil every 5000 - 6000 miles but they seem to be pretty adamant about it. I guess if you are riding the car hard, thicker oil should be better. JMO.

You can use anything that's 229.5 or 229.51 spec.

I am not trying to imply that I am more knowledgeable or experienced as the boys at Renntech, and Mobil 1 15w-50 may very well be an appropriate lubricant for your vehicle, but the belief that a higher viscosity oil is better for "hard" driving is one that I do not ascribe to. A quality 30 or 40 weight synthetic oil can provide all the protection you need. Both the C5 and C6 Corvettes spec a 5w-30 synthetic oil for their engines and they are notorious for running hot. There may be other attributes of Mobil 1 15w-50 that make it the wise choice for your V-12, but I don't believe that the recommendation is based solely on the higher viscosity. Below is a link to an interesting article from Ford regarding the use of 5w-20 oils in their vehicles.

Just to shed some light on the Renntech boys. I think
they might be recomending 15 over 0 because its south
FL. The weather is alot warmer and humid here, so its
easier to get away with a thicker oil. In the north where
its cold, you dont want to use as thick of an oil, as it will
take a little while to lubricate all the parts from a cold
start. Atleast this is what my personal mechanic has taught
me.
