Sound of the GAS TANK!!

Not sure if I am hearing things or not, but never noticed it in the past. Now when stopping with a little force, I can hear what sounds like gas in the tank sloshing around. Anyone else hearing this??????

Stephen, I hear the same thing. I understand that this is a common issue in SL's, it means that the tank's inner diaphragms are broken, thus the sloshing sound.

To get rid of the problem, one should replace the gas tank which is a costly procedure. Almost all of the back of the car should be disassembled, along with back seats area, etc plus the cost of a new tank.

I am not aware if this is covered by your warranty - but if not, is it really worth the hassle if the sloshing does not bother you? Turn the stereo up a couple of notches plus you already have an engine with a loud voice to overshadow the sloshing

Maybe someone else from here has encountered same problem and got it fixed??

George

Interesting problem. I've heard gasoline sloshing around depending on the amount of gas and the type of stop for years in all types of cars, but never considered it a "problem". I'll have to throw out the anchor on the CLK and see if I hear the gasoline next time a fill up. Not that I'd care if I heard anything.

this was a problem with the early sl55. i had the tank replaced with no further problems. it will be under warranty. it is a lengthy job and if it doesn't bother you a lot you may not want to do it.

The price you pay for a car this nice.

StephenK, that was a problem with a lot of early SL's in 2002 I think. It should be fixed no charge, it's a manufacturers problem IMO.

Come on guys!

As some of you can agree, I am one of the pickest around and truthfully, I don't remember hearing even the slightest sound from this and that is after having a 2003 SL500, 2004 SL55 and 2005 SL600.

I know my hearing is good. I wonder what is wrong with me?

Damn, here I thought you guys were on something and we were all going to have a party.

Sloshing in the SL ?

I have a customer who had this issue with his new 2003 SL500.
I remember when he first got the car. It was his only real issue
about the car. It was kinda nasty to listen to a new car on every stop
with the toilet splash sound.

Warranty. I guess it was common. There may have been a recall for it.
I am sure someone on this board will know the skinny on this.

As far as my 2005 SL55. No fuel sounds whatsoever.
The only sloshing is in me after a few drinks.

Just rev the engine a little so cover the noise of the sloshing when you approach a light.

Beware, you might attract ricers.

What they said

They said that the baffles in the tank busted and that is the reason I am hearing the fuel sloshing around. I will let you know how the installation goes tomorrow, actually it will probably be a two day deal at the dealership.
