Does anyone here have any experience with changing the rear end gears on the SL? The stock 2.56 ratio seems a bit long-legged for the US, especially given the governor limitation of 155 mph. I'm wondering what a lower set of gears would do for the acceleration, and what computer mods would have to be done to compensate.
Surely one of you tuner outfits has some knowledge on this? Dino? Anyone?
I'm really surprised this hasn't been tried before. Am I wrong in thinking this would make a big difference in acceleration? Are the ECU changes just not possible or too hard?

Agreed! Most vehicles built for 1/4 mile do not do 200 mph. I would think a similar result could be obtained with a smaller od tire as well. Same speedo error but less unsprung weight. It would be interesting to see the results of a rear end swap or 285/30 R18 or some such tire would have on the acceleration.
ECU change has to be done if you do a rear gear swap and dealerships cannot do those but I know who can....
Do you know what other gears are available for that housing? Also, assuming you mean yourself on the ECU changes, how much do you charge to reprogram? Thanks for the response!

I would have to hook the star to a car and see what options are available. I will try to do that next week.
awesome! thanks
