2008 SL550 quality, rattles and squeaks

Now have 800 miles on my sl 550, and it seems I hear a lot of squeaks from different locations around the car, sounds like the roof and dash to be exact. I have an annoying rattle in the dash that won't go away. I'm not really that picky but a new car should not loosen up so quickly.

My father's 08 sl550 has 300 miles on it and his too doesn't sound solid over bumps. My father's s550 has a bad rattle in the dash and my brothers ml350 also has a few rattles in it as well and it only has 700 miles on it?

So what gives, has mercedes quality gone down the tubes? It's hard to believe these are 100 plus thousand cars and they loosen up after a few 100 miles or so? Anyone else have these problems?

Plastic

I think the problem is the increased use of cheaper and cheaper plastics in the car.

I think most of your rattles and squeaks are from body roll. My 2003 SL has considerable body roll, with the top up you can really hear the squeeking. With the top down there is a lot less squeaking. Try test driving a CLK hardtop, you will probably find it has a lot less squeaking as there's no body roll.

My 07 seems very well built, sorry to hear your troubles. Have them fix it right away.
Could be you fellas got a bad batch. No joke. Before they sometimes catch a minor problem several cars get through, and what better place to send the rejects than USA, where its fasionable these days to disrespect and disregard.
Remember the French are their cousins.

sl`s have always had noise issues, the s550 and new ml`s have not had noise issues, MB has been trying to change materials to make there cars quieter, squeaks and rattles have been a big problem, and sometimes are very hard to find and fix. Bring your cars to the dealer and drive with the foreman and show them the noise so they will know what noise you are concerned with.

My 2008 is solid as a rock, no noises that should not be there. Totally different vehicle compared to my 2003 SL. Maybe they dropped yours off the truck?

2007 sl550
I have a 2007 sl550 with 3000 agressive miles and plenty of speed bumps and it is surprisingly VERY solid and rattle free. I have driven/owned several MBs and although they have a few problems structural rigidity and rattles, etc was never an issue.

I have a 2007 SL550 with 3000 mi. and its VERY solid and rattle free. I expected some because of the complicated mechanical top but none yet.

maybe I have a sensitive ear or something. I will ask the dealer next time i bring the car in for service. Sometimes when they try and fix rattles they cause other rattles

No bad batch. My 2003 has 78k miles on it. It will squeek, if I got the roof mechanisms lubed I'm sure it would stop. But it is no big deal to me.

I know this an old thread, but I figured id add this so if somebody did a search they could get all this info in one place. My 2006 SL had some constant rattling noises when the top was up even on pretty smooth roads. Picked it up today and the noises were pretty much gone. Here is the exact fix they performed from my invoice:

"PERFORM REPAIR PER DTB P-B77.30/33C CONDITION 1 [ I. Noises at seals of Vario (Hardtop) Roof when driving ] 1> Move roof to an intermediate position to gain access to the roof seals. 2> Clean all seals which come in contact with the painted metal areas of the roof and body and the upper edges of the side glass using a clean, soft cloth and the window cleaning agent listed below. 3> Actuate roof through the full opening and closing cycle several times."
