SL/R230: Has anyone installed AMG exhaust on SL600?
I'm wondering how loud the exhaust sound is like. Cons and Pros.
I do not want a really loud and annoying sound, but want to achieve a deep low tone and sportier look. Thanks
If that's the case then you would have a very restrictive merge pipe just behind the secondary cats. The 55 has separate pipes front to tip. With this gone and adding the 55's resonators which are essentially straight through boxes with silencing wadding combined with the 55 mufflers, again straight through will definitley give you a deeper tone.
If the standard 600 muffler is the same as the 500 then this is extremely restictive and very quiet so that will make a difference straight away. I expect it will be too loud without the middle resonators but that's your choice.
The main thing is separating the left and right bank of cylinders by removing the merge pipe. How best to describe the result? Well it sort of slows the sound down, i.e. you hear the thump of the left bank then the thump of the right rather than the two mixed together.
Of course if the the 600 setup is nothing like the 500 then I'm talking horse sh*t so please ignore.

really...the price difference between a 500 and 600 is huge when new (thats why I can only afford used).....but the stuff you get in the 600 doesnt really justify that difference...
The exhaust setup is the same as the 500....pretty much everything else is too...
except:
engine
alcantara headliner
brakes
the badge

nevertheless..I still love the car

I was wondering how SL600 would turn out with AMG exhaust muffler if I swap the exhaust system. The loudness and the feel of SL600 with AMG muffler.
As you know, SL600 is very very quiet and smooth. I just need a little more bass tone.
So it sounds as if the 600 and 500 set up is similar in which case the full AMG cat back system should give you what your're after. Whether you change out the merge pipe is up to you but I would recommend you consider it but at least you could have this done in 2 stages to assess the result.
If in doubt, do it! it's only a bunch of pipes afterall.

Thank you for your information.
I belive that the AMG supercharged V8 engine and bi-turbo V12 engine make different sounds. V12 bi-turbo is alot lot quieter than the supercharged V8. The clip shows the S65 AMG, not the V12 engine with AMG exhaust sound.
Thanks..

. That second clips sounds interesting but not as good as a V8 to my ears, a little too raw.Love the SL by the way.

AMG V12's are quiet because of the turbos.

Just to see how it looks before and after, so even to know, what have to do?
Thanks.
I dont see the comparison to the 500? Stock the 600 is a slightly faster car than the 55. Chip it and you have close to SL65 power. Lower it and put on 19's and the handling is much improved.
