Unhappy A week out of warrenty and my car dies on me...

My car is a week out of warranty now. The last 2 weeks it spent at the dealer getting throughly inspected for any and all potential issues. They gave her a clean bill of health.

Today out of no where, the check engine light comes on as the engine is shaking before completely cutting off/no power. I restart the car and gingerly drive her back home, check engine light still on. I have to now find time to get it back to the dealer.

Dont worry yet...

Have an SL600...and first got it had problems with check engine. I did some research, and found that after several starts or an hour of drive time that it will go out. Evidently the computer sometimes needs to make some sort of engine adjustments. Check this for yourself on the internet / the owner manual (not sure where I read it). Otherwise, it could be something as simple as a fuel filter...although will be pricey on a benz. I recommend pay the $4K for an extended warranty if you plan on keeping it a while. No problems with mine yet but have read horror stories...GOOD LUCK!!

Thanks for the encouraging words! I take her in Wednesday and hopefully everything will sort itself out and nothing major is in error.

Sorry to hear that. Hope is nothing major. I had a similar problem last week if you read my previous threads. It turned out to be a faulty Crank Position Sensor (CPS). Mine was fixed under warrenty, but it is not something major or expensive to fix if it is a faulty CPS.

Since it is only 2 weeks out of your warrenty, you should bring it back to the same dealership and they should at least split the costs of repair for you.

Thanks for the insight. You wouldn't happen to know what it roughly/ballpark cost to repair (in case they do feel like not helping me out as it is technically ex warranty)

My ex-cars: 03 E55,04 C32, 05 C55 ,03 E320
I had an experience with my SL600 that when I started the car, the engine was rough and the check engine light went on.
I drove it home, shut it off, let it sit for 10 mins and restarted it...Everything worked fine again..

I think the part itself (the CPS unit) is $184 and the check up is another $180 or so. My friend's ML broke down last month, 1 month after his warrent expired. The dealer actually split the repair bill with him. So, I think you should at least try to push for a split bill. Good luck.

Before you start dropping loads of cash on repairs, disconnect the battery, and let the car sit for a bit, and then reconnect the battery. Sometimes the computer needs to be reset to clear any inconsistencies. Also, be sure to have the proper radio code to punch in after you do this. A simple call to any MB service department with your VIN handy will provide you with the code.

No, do not just undo the battery...it will do nothing. Resetting the computer has nothing to do with the engine cutting out. I had the CPS done in November.....$200-250 with labor included. I had the same problems you did.

I have it at the dealer now. They are have having trouble ID'ing what exactly is wrong (ie labor costs will be 'amusing'), but think it is an ignition issue. They are pulling the coils to check those next.

Interesting note:

I have already purchased through CHRYSLER SERVICE CONTRACTS an extended warranty (Max care, $0 deductible, 3 year extension, 50,000 miles max; car has 15,xxx miles now).

This I imagine will be an interesting real world test of the warranty, in case anyone else is interested in purchasing through them.
