Just purchased a 2006 SL500!! Sweet deal!! But....

Since it was a PreOwned vehicle the dealer already had a front license plate bracket installed on the bumper. I just took it off and the holes look horrible.

Any suggestions for a quick fix to conceal or plug up the holes? I did purchase the touch up paint 775 Silver.

I remember seeing a thread that a forum member posted about finding some plugs from a automotive store and painting them to match the color and plug them in.

Any recommendations will be greatly appreciated!

For a temporary fix try using some small silver screws with tiny heads from Home Depot. They will be much smaller then the original screws that were used but should go in and hide the holes. Also you can push the area back in around the screws by heating it up slightly with a hair dryer if the damage caused the area around the holes to push forward when they were drilled...just heat it up gradually on a low setting and push the damaged area back in with your fingers gently. Theres a guy from the 6 speed forum who makes bumper plugs that are painted to match your car as well.

I think I might go that route. How would I go about getting in contact with him to place a order?

Thanks for the insight by the way.

There is a product out there from bumperplugs.com I installed a set on my SL and couldn't be happier. A little pricey for a small item but quality and a perfect match take a look.

Dumb question

Aren't front plates required in California?

We live in NC and I almost bought a VA car with the same holes. Annoying at best.

Yeah. They're required, But it looks way cleaner without the front plates on.

A good body shop will fill in the holes and you can avoid the plugs.

You should only need 1 set of two. Pull the bracket off to be sure.

License Plate Issues

California requires front plates and no covers on the plates. Yet many cars have no front plates and covers on the rear plates. It is a $10 or fix it ticket. There is a lot of noncompliance. The Police should have bigger things to worry about that a front license plate on the car.

Yea...it's all about revenue generating for California - I received a ticket that was left on my windshield while my vehicle was parked at LAX for a few days in the long term parking. Couldn't even read the officer's writing it was so bad - when I finally reached someone at LAPD, I was told it was a violation for "no front license plate". I wasn't required to fix it! Just pay the fine of $65.00 or so. So it's obviously just about money - if there was a real concern about having the plate on there, I would have been required to get the plate on there. Tinted windows are the same deal here in CA - illegal so they can collect fines for it - but they're perfectly legal in other states. Go figure...
