I've seen pics, and that 360 view, and it just looks like a shelf there, not very comfortable at all... can someone resolve this?

There is a shelf there , under one side is the cd changer , no u cannot sit there , it is made for special luggage to fit there, we are talking the SL55 or the SL500

None of the SL have ever had back seats, the old 107 bodies had an aftermarket jump seat you could buy and put back there, I don't remember if it had seat belts or not and the 107's had more room back there(the top and seats were not electric.)

There are strong rumors of a CL55 Cabrio (in Europe at least- 150,000 euros - 150,000 pounds [I've seen both listed]); I have seen the pictures and a short article in one of the major US automotive magazines. It was stated that the CL cabriolet would come in the AMG tuned variety only, but there's always hope that the twin turbo V12 might be produced. There is also the new version of the CLK55 Cabrio which should be quite quick, have seating for four and definitely be available in the US for a lot less. Both have to make do with a conventional cloth albeit a good cloth top; a Vario roof was too expensive and difficult to produce for a four seater or so they said.

It is correct that prototypes were running around and the German auto press had projected a CL55 Cabrio, but if memory serves me right it was officially axed by Mercedes management within the past few months. Sorry. (Now maybe we will get to see a cabrio with folding hardtop on the recently reported and yet to be built E class 4 door coupe?!)

Actually, the 129's in Europe have back seats. [optional on the small engine models, standard on the large [in UK]]

However, they are tiny seats, too small for very small children in car seats (because their knees are at the wrong place, so cant bend, and therefore get rammed against the front seat backs], not suitable for rear facing baby seats as they had lap belts only. I imagine 8-12 year olds would fit - any taller get hit in head by roll bar, or twisted neck when roll bar is up !

Richard's correct. With the R230, Mercedes have at last admitted that the rear seats in the previous SL generations were next to useless. It would be good if other manufacturers would stop kidding themselves that their cars can take more than 2 people, not least Porsche.
