nav disc update?

hi
anyone update from 2005 disk to later/newer version?
could you comment on any software updates and did your command have to be updated from the dealer to accept the jump in updates?
thanks

I did a couple of months ago. They had to change the DVD drive in the trunk... the new nav disc is not compatible with the old drive. I don't know why.

I was fortunate in that the drive was changed under warranty. The new disc was around $200 as I recall.

thanks jack.
was it worth the update?
i had an 06 e350 and i seem to recall that the nav had more features in paticular a way to change the way the nav calculates the route with an option for quicker time or shortest distance which mine now does not have.
thanks

Hard to say if it was worth it. Changes that I have noticed include more detailed points of interest and parking locations around your destination. The video map is much more detailed than in the previous version. It also seems that the directions provided by the voice are more specific than they were with the previous version. Planning different routes still involves avoiding the use of freeways, toll roads etc. It is not as simple as you describe (quicker time, shortest distance).

I still prefer the navigation system in my Honda over the SL by a wide margin.

Did the dealer give you any problem about changing the hardware at no cost? I would like to get this done on my 2005 SL500, but didn't want to incur any hardware costs. The nav system on my 2008 GL550 is much better, and would like to get that system in my SL.

The only hardware that was changed was the DVD reader in the trunk, and that was done under warranty at no charge. I was surprised that they went to the expense of changing it rather than just telling me that the new Nav disc was not compatible with the old player, and refunding my $200 for the disc.

I am not familiar with the Nav in the GL, but it may take more than a simple update of the nav disc to make your SL its equivalent. I will let you know when I get to my car which models my 2008 disc will work in.

Regardless, if you are going to update the disc, do it before your warranty expires!

I am glad yours worked without a hitch. I was surprised that my hardware needed to be changed in order to read the updated disk. Imagine if that happened with a movie on DVD!
