Road Trip
Hey just came back for that first time on a long road trip with my 03 SL. The trip was 910 miles and I only had to fill up two time and had 3/4 of a tank when I got there. pretty good for a V8 cruise was set on 77 mph...

Sounds like you went far on a little gasoline... A 910 mile trip from where to where? I assume all (high speed) highway miles... and I thought an SL could only get 10 or 20 Miles Per Gallon... Can you estimate the number of gallons used and the MPG? Thanks

That sounds reasonable. 21 gallon tank. 2 1/4 tanks of fuel = ~47 gallons. 910/47= ~19.5mpg. (I'm assuming you left the house with a full tank, before you filled up twice.)
My friend took my chipped SL600 (V12) for a 200 mile trip two weekends ago and got 20.3mpg according to the in-dash computer. Of course, I only see about 16mpg with my "spirited" driving.

I left Ft. Leonardwood, Missouri to Reidsville, Georgia...the gauge said little over 23.4gal and I left the house with a full tank. Most of the trip was Interstates

Metalica must have done very well in Algebra class. But if these cars are capable of 23-26 mpg fuel economy, why do they force new SL buyers to pay a Gas Guzzler Tax?

i guess we get taxed because of the low city mpg rating which is around 15. i know for a fact i can get 25.5 mpg on the highway strictly using cruise control. its so good on the highway when my brothers and i took a road trip to VA and we all drove our own cars they had to fill up twice when i only need to fill up once!

I usually get ~20mpg on the highway...... but I am usually in triple digits.
..... and I get 6.5 mpg at the track! But I love chasing down those Porsches, Ferraris and Vettes!

Here's mine
Took a short trip today and snapped a shot of the dash to show the mileage. First time I have topped 26 mpg. This was 80% highway and the rest city type speeds and traffic.
My S550 got over 25 mpg on a 5500 mile cross country trip and now a little over 26 mpg on another 550 engine equipped MB. No complaints here...

I love the SL. The S and GL were two of the best MB's I have ever owned and the SL fits that mold. Great handling and power and fun to drive. The size fits my lifestyle more than that limo sized S and the monster sized GL. All in all very satisfied and happy.

The '03 E was nice also but the combination of the 5.5 liter engine with the 7 speed is just so perfect. Remembering back the '77 280E, the '79 SL, the '80 240D, the '81 SL, etc, etc,... oh hell LIONHEAD, never really had one I didn't like.
That driveway combo you have now is really awesome... how many times have you been ticketed for running a little fast at times...? That SL65 must be the pits to drive!

LOL...I was just kiddin around. Yes....I remember my parent's 300SD, 300E and their 560SEL. No tickets yet....knock on wood. Eventhough I think the Jag looks a tad better.....it can't beat the power and open air driving of the SL65 so the Jag mostly sits in the garage now. That's great that you can average 26 MPG in your SL550! I remember just running around town and back I averaged 9 MPG.
