iPod in 2005

Has anyone found a way to direct wire an iPod in a 2005 SL500? The FM transmitter route just doesn't cut it. Thanks.

Dension is the way to go, do a search and will found more info.
I'm also thinking to buy a Dension system for my SL55.

I'm looking into this currently as well. I don't know yet, but I think for some 2005 models there is a door inside the glove box behind which there is a connector for which an adapter can be purchased. For others, I think the Dennison DICE kit is necessary. My car falls into the latter category, and I'm researching options for installation in the Bay Area right now. If anyone knows of any reputable installation shops in or near SF, please let me know.

@mikeinsf, in my research I've found that there were AUX plugs in the models before 2005 (2003, 2004). They eliminated in 2005 and beyond for some reason -- probably to sell their incredibly overpriced iPod integration kit.

@ianzeuss, Is it only your dealer that will wire an AUX plug? And for which model/year will they do that?

In the dash glove box. Its on the left side of the compartment. You would never see it if you didn't know it was there.

I understand that for the 05 SL, the cd changer can be swapped out for a Dension kit to operate in its place, with full steering wheel and COMAND integration......

Does anyone know which Dension kit will do this (ie the Gateway 500, etc.)?

http://www.incartronics.com has options for your car if it was not wired stock. Take a look.

At Incartronics, their iPod / BT system will run $1079 in parts.
The Denison Gatway system parts can be found on Ebay for around $650.

Is there something better about the incartronics system that warrants the extra $450 in cost?

Just took the plunge and ordered the Dension Gateway 500 system off Ebay. I'll post feedback and put up a demo on Youtube once I recieve it and have it installed. Likely to take a few weeks I imagine.

I have a 2005 as well. If you do not mind me asking, how much was it?? What do you think installation will run and who do you plan to have do it?

It was $439 including ground shipping. It's the best price I've seen. Search for the model number: GW51MO2. I'm not sure about the install yet. I'm looking for a reputable shop in the Bay Area. In the past I've been to too many other places who end up with extra parts of your car left over after they're done. I'm trying to avoid that this time. I'm guessing the install will cost $200-300.

If anyone has a recommendation for an install shop within 50 miles of San Francisco, please let me know.

For those who have aftermarket iPod contollers installed, do you usually run the cable to the center console or the glovebox? I'm not sure which I want to do.

Got my Dension Gateway installed. I'm able to change the COMAND unit to CD-changer, and have audio feed in to the system from the iPod. There's a little switch I flick (part of the Dension wiring) that allows me to change between sourcing the CD-changer and the iPod, both via the CD-changer setting on the COMAND.

PROBLEM: None of the track text comes thru to the head unit or the console from teh iPod. All i see on the comand unit is Track 01, Track 02, etc...

Can anyone out there provide any insights on what the installer may have done wrong? As I understand it, this should support full text in the instrument cluster and the COMAND unit.
