Roof Operation

I saw another post about someone looking to buy a car where the roof makes a buzzing noise while in operation.

Mine has always done this and when being serviced both in and out of warranty (it is a 2005) i have been advised it is fine.

it works perfectly fine but you can hear the motor all the way thru the operation and can hear the changes in noise as different things occur during normal roof operation.

Is there something wrong here or much ado about nothing. I HATE taking the car in as its always a PITA and i dont have any issue with its functionality but i dont want to ruin anything either.

What is the deal in how it is supposed to sound

I don't know what everyone else is talking about, but the roof operation isn't "silent". I can hear the pump working and the gap flaps folding out/in and stuff. I also hear the hook unlatch from the windshield at the beginning of the operation. Maybe I'm just ****, but I definitely like to hear certain noises from my car during operation. Now if they get too loud or don't occur at all, it lets me know something is wrong.
If you want, I'll try and video the operation in my silent garage. Would you rather hear it from inside the car or outside?

I wouldn't say the pump is completely silent. I do hear a small buzz or humming sound that changes tone depending on what is happening, but it is not very loud. The pump sounds much like the pump on my CLK430 did. I think the way it was described in the other thread sound abnormal.

You should hear some sound but it should be pretty quiet. You should not hear any creaking, popping, rubbing, etc.

Yeah -- I'd characterize the noise level as being that of an electric motor -- quiet but noticeable. If it starts sounding like an internal combustion engine, there's something wrong...

What about roof calibration?
Could it be tightened somehow?
Because I guess that mine is a little bit loose after 6 years of using...

I have heard at least 5 different SL roof operations in the last month throughout my search. All but one were fairly silent, and the louder one also put the roof up and down without any noticeable problems.

I also didnt expect a "silent" operation, again best described as most were a humming noise and one had more of a buzzing noise...maybe think of your cell phone buzzing in your hand as silent and put it on your desk and it will be alot louder buzzing, not the same noise but you get the point.

The old thread about the air bubble is also helpful, and I'm actually leaning towards more the time it takes 16-sec or so more than the noise, but of course will check both.

Ok i feel better now. Mine make nose like an electric motor, NOTHING like an internal combustion engine but i do know it is on

Sounds like most of us have the same noise and my dealer said it is working fine, i am not going to worry about it

As far as I'm aware, 16 seconds is the quoted time it takes for the top to fully complete its work -- that should be fine.
