on a 2005 sl 500 is there any sensors on the cat?
do you cut it out including the piece where the 2 pipes are "crunched" together just behind the cat?
(see pic in post 11 in the following link.)
thanks

It should cost right at $100
Any local muffler shop should and will be able to do it
There are only sensors in the primary cats, so you will not have to worry about throwing any codes
Here's what my C55 looks like with the resonator and secondary cats deleted(not the best picture but you can see the 3 new pipes:

if you look at the pic in the link in my post #3 above could you tell me if they cut out the part where the 2 pipes are "squashed" together?

UPDATE:
I just had my car smogged successfully without the secondary's. Just a heads up for all of you looking for some good cheap sound but were unsure of the smog laws.

$400!!??
Hey fellas~
So I went to this indipendant MB shop that does a fair amount of aftermarket stuff on MB's to get an estimate for the Cat deletes, and the guy told me it would take himn about 5 hours to drop the exhaust cut em out and properly weld the straight stainless pipes in place. It came out to be over $400!! He said I could do it for cheaper if they use exhaust clamps... How did you guys comne up with that amazing price of just about 100 bucks? did the drop the whole exhaust system?

Ummmm, I said "$40" not $100....LOL. I would check the same shops that do Hondas if you want to save more money. Anybody specializing in MB is going to bend you over. For the record, for anything else I would never recommend going to a non specialist but in this case, everybody does it the EXACT same way!

Hello,
The high flow secondaries work really well with our direct bolt on R230 SL500/SL55 Performance Headers. It you want to go the more conservative route and still pickup alot of power, go with the 300-cell metal core cats. They are 49 state legal and will give you more power & flow without changing the cars emissions or sound too much (for those that are more environmentally conscious). Its $180 shipped for the pair. 2.5" is proper diameter.

I had mine done yesterday at the muffler shop for 130.00. He cut out the two rear cats and added two pipes in. I don't know if it would make a difference, but the two pipes that they welded was a little smaller than the rest of the exhaust.

Pvlexxxus,
was it worth it? Do you notice any difference in sound or performance? I can't find anyone here in the Baltimore region to do it for less than 250!
I'm debating whether it's worth it... Let me know if you notice any difference.
Thanks

It was worth it for me. It's cheaper than having new cat converters installed. So far it does sound a little deeper. That's the only difference that I notice. Hopefully after a few weeks I will notice more. I noticed that on Mr. Specials photo, his was the same size pipe as his exhaust. Mine wasn't the same size, it was smaller.

I was out earlier tonight with my friend, we both have sl500s but he has the cat converter to where I have the two rear cats replaced with pipes. I noticed a difference in performance. My car pulled alot quicker than him every time we started to race. He now wants to do the same on his car. He wants to do the same mod also now because he loves the sound. Best 130, I've ever spent.
