Brake Pads and Rotors Service!

So, I brought my car to B-service to my dealer and they told me I have 4mm left on my brake pads and rotors on both rear and front.

To change the whole set of 4 rotors and brake pads, they quoted me around $1300, which is about $650 for front set, $550 for rear set and $100 to turn off SBC system in order to do that service.

It seems like its a lot Is there a way to do it cheaper? like buy the set somewhere on ebay, and find some good place who can do it?

I live in Baltimore, so if you know any good place that can do it, it would be appreciated to know.

Also, where exactly can i buy rotors and pads online and it would be nice to know what type cause I dont know anything in this business

1300 is a bit high but realistically think what youd pay for rotors and pads

you are looking at roughly 500 in just rotors give or take and another 200 or so in pads and a flat fee of 100 to turn off the sbc

if you think they are charging roughly 100 bucks ( i know its higher but i am using this for math purposes)

so on just flat charges we are talking 800 dollars and this is not at retail part prices

the remaining 500 is for lets say 5 hours worth of labor......i dont think i can realistically replace my pads and brake rotors in 5 hours as well as they do

when you really break it down the 1300 seems much more reasonable although its high its not absurd

Good guy near balt

Armic,

He PM me... I have a guy out off of rt140 that is great on MB's. I found my rotors and pads online and had him install them. I only did the front but it cost me a grand total of like 5 or 600 bucks and I couldn't be happier... This guy's really good, I think he used to work for an MB dealer or something of the sort. Either way I HIGHLY recommend him.

Cheers-

George

Charging $100 to turn off SBC is robbery. They just need to unplug the SBC module under the hood. Although MB recommends changing the rotors, depending on how many miles they have and their thickness, you may not need to change them. I would recommend a very low dust pad like the Akebono ceramic (about $70/pr per axle) which have excellent street manners and stopping ability but are by no means able to tolerate the high heat of a track event. Just take them to a local shop you trust, make sure to tell them to disconnect the SBC, and change the pads out. If you truly need rotors, don't get cheap Chinese replacements. Get German or American rotors (Wagners cost about $100/pr for front and $50/pr for rears).

Changing pads and rotors is quick and easy. Labor should be around $100 per axle.

That's my 2 cents.

An average person with the correct tools should be able to do a complete 4 wheel brake job in under 4 hours. Those with experience, under 2 hours. On track days, I change all 4 rotors and pads twice in a day-each time taking about 70 minutes.

Just do a google search for Akebono EUR847. $71 and free shipping was the best price I found.

Power Stop Evolution Ceramics are $40.58 delivered on ebay, but I cannot vouch for their quality or performance.

SBC is the Sensotronic Brake Control module that must be disengaged to change the pads safely. I just disconnected the cable going to the module when I change pads regularly on my E55. Or you can disconnect the battery but that is more of a pain and necessitates a reset after reconnecting.

i just had all four of my brakes done by a regular shop for $150. i purchased the porterfield r4s pads on my own for about $300 which came with a free brake silencer kit.

i knew the shop could do an sl's brakes because my friend with an sl had his done here. i watched closely as they did all 4 pads and it really was no big deal. i dis-connected the rear battery but otherwise it seed pretty routine. i normally do my own brakes but i wanted to see it done for the 1st time.

check around for a qualified shop and save some cash

oh btw NO BRAKES DUST, HALLELUJAH

can you give me the number and the person who did that.
I go to NYC pretty often, if that happens I might as well use that opportunity as the brake cost relief
