SL/R230: anyone know how to reset our ecu or adaptive transmission
Almost every model since 1998
And no it can't be set as the default since it is part of the transmissions TCU adaptive learning process. That doesn't mean you can't perform it once a week if desired but if you drive it briskly enough to want to do it once a week your transmission is never going to be in sedate mode anyway

Ten seconds works better than 5 and wait 5 minutes to drive it or the readapt might not set.
Also to make sure of readapt make sure the door is closed and radio is off when you perform it.

Turn the ignition key to the on (not start) position.
Press the gas pedal to the floor and hold for five seconds.
Turn the key to the "off" position (don't remove the key), then release the gas pedal.
Wait at least two minutes for ECU to reset.
after 2 mins exactly from turning the key to the off position you can hear a click from behind the steering binnacle.
I prefer to shift higher up so this worked a treat.
I had a ball of codes in the ECU with limp home mode etc,
changed the tranny electrical connector, ATF had wicked up into the ECU, took it out and cleaned it off with electrical contact cleaner.
before doing the soft reset the car wouldn't engage from park, had to do the pen in the gap trick to get the solenoid to release and then when i went out of D couldn't get back to R or P without turning off.
soft reset sorted all that including the solenoid bit.
I had pulled the shifter mechanism out and took it down to it's boards, hit it with contact cleaner as well. it was filthy down there, the previous owner must have been a pig. you could see where fluid had stained up the concertina cover and the board itself.
happy,
d.
One thing I found confusing about this thread is whether taking your foot off the pedal was actually the last step. You have to hold it down while waiting the minimum of 5 seconds before turning off the key and continue holding it down for the minimum of 2 minutes before pulling the key out?
You can check this out easily, enter a free way accelerating hard and engage CC and the car will change down on up hills to maintain that speed. Enter the free way slowly and engage the CC and the chances are the box will not change down to re gain the set speed
