I installed Akebonos on my SL600 - no squeal and no dust. If you are looking for a quiet and dust free pad - go with them. I am pretty sure everyone here will tell you Akebonos are quiet and dust free.
However - if you drive your car very hard; I would not recommend them. I've noticed that if I get them too hot they start to fade really bad compared to when I had the OEM pads.

I agree with five337 if drive your car hard don't use them I installed one after a week I took my car to track race the got over heated very easy I almost got in to bad accident they over heated and all my brake disabled and I have to use emergency brake to stop the car. I have to wait for almost one hour for the brake to cool down so the brake to work again they damage my rear brake disk which need to be replaced.

I'm glad to hear it wasn't my imagination. After just a couple of quick slow downs on the freeway the brakes start to scare me.
If your average MPG is around 10-12 then I really think you need to stick with the OEM pads and just learn to deal with the dust and noise.

any other SL owners have opinions on how these perform? for the most part I just cruise around town with it and take it on vacation, but I do drag the car once in a while

you will be fine ive been running the akebono pads for a few years now and they do fine under normal driving conditions and the cut down on brake dust is huge.
if you are just doing drags everyone once in a while you will be fine, its more the guys who corner the car hard where the issues of brake fade come into play

Changing to Akebono brake pads
Hello,
I read on a post about your changing the pads on your SL600 and unplugging the SBC to work on them. Did that result in any codes after finished? I've got front and rear ceramic pads ready to go but this is the first of my 6 Mercedes that has that.
Thanks, Ed
