The MB parts are only about $20 more than the aftermarket ones (at least that I could find). They are very easy to replace. 30 seconds each side. Probably quicker if you have someone hold it open for you.

I put mine on, would strongly suggest you have help to hold the lid, there is a metal retaining clip on the end of the struts with a small groove, insert a flat head screw driver and pry the clip off, you may have to wiggle a bit but it should come right off, the new one will just pop on, easiest thing I think you can do on a mercedes yourself

I had the same problem. Picked up a OEM set off ebay using the part number on the original struts. Held the trunk top with a wood pole. They come off by sticking a small flat screw driver into underneath the clip on each end of the strut. You will see a factory indented slot where the screwdriver blade goes. Stick it under there and pop off the clip. Do top and bottom, the just pop the strut off to the outside. The new ones snap right on out of the bag. Takes only a few minutes.
You will notice the difference immediately. Not only will the trunk not shut on your head, it will also try to open by itself because the new struts work so well.

Thanks! I now have 2 struts headed my way for the $31.95 each.
Odd that doing a search on their sites, based on make / model / year and "trunk" would only produce struts in $5x range..

I'll say the OEM ones work well! I had my SL parked under my lift and I forgot I had replaced them. I opened the trunk with the force I was used to and BAM- right into the lift leakage. Now I had a dent just in the wrong place (center behind the sat ant.). PDR impossible=a new paint job on the trunk lid $850 hard lesson.

Easy and Cheap Fix
I just bought a set of 2 trunk shocks for $23.98 on Amazon. Installed one and found that it now held the trunk lid securely so I left old one still in place and will change that out when it no longer works. Tip: Watch this video before you install!:

Why would you stress a new part with a load that it was not designed for. And take a second look at the hinges of that lid, on my car I wouldn't dream of stressing those with a clearly uneven support. Man, that lid is HEAVY and the hinges are, shall we say, both slender and multi pivotal.

As stated above - BAD IDEA. Support struts that work in pairs should ALWAYS be replaced in pairs.
So let's see... you bought two for $23.98, and you're only gonna use one now and save the other for later?
Are you driving a Benz or a 1997 Hyundai?
